to see each other.

The Nature of Nonverbal

Intentional & Unintentional
o We can decide to send a messages but we also send messages we are unaware that
we are sending or don’t mean to send.

Ambiguous
What does a wave mean? Hello or goodbye?
o To understand the meaning, we must understand the context and relationship
between the senders and receivers.

Multi-channeled
o Unlike language- one channel symbols
o Nonverbal is multi channeled: We can use our body, voice & appearance to send

Culturally-bound
o Nonverbals are derived from our culture
o “OK” US= fine or okay in South America= raised middle finger
Functions of Nonverbal Communication

Bodily Movement (Kinesics)
o Can be used to convey substantial info & thoughts. (i.e. A wave)

Emblems – Movement that takes the place of a word. (i.e. Stop hand
signal)

Illustrators – Movement that enhances verbal message. (i.e. Slamming a
door)


Affect displays – Behaviors that display our emotional state. (i.e. A stare/
smile)

Regulators – Behaviors used to control or regulate a conversation. (i.e.
Feedback from the listeners to determine their understanding, keep/stop
talking)

Adaptors – Behaviors used to cope with uncomfortable situations. (i.e.
Tap feet nervously- instead of dashing out the door)

Touch
o Can show concern (hand on shoulder), passion (kiss).
o People react differently to touch.
Think of the public reaction to First Lady Michelle Obama and Queen
Elizabeth of Great Britain’s embrace in April 2009, p. 87.
o Interpretation of touch depends on our socialization & context of the situation.

Paralanguage & Silence
o Pitch (tone), volume (loudness), rate (speed), quality (richness in voice)
o Fillers: Sounds used to fill in the gaps between words.
o Silence: The absence of our voice, can refer to non response to e-mails or texts.
How do you interpret when a significant other doesn’t respond to a text?

Physical Appearance & Clothing
What does clothing communicate?
o Projects image: People establish perceptions of you based on appearance.
o Sends positive and negative messages.
o Makes a difference in our opportunities to establish relationships, find jobs.

o Messages can be sent by the use of our time.

Arriving on time or late. Spending time with someone.
What message might you send to someone when you show up late?
What message might you send when you spend time with someone?
