SUMER! 

CULTURE!







Found on the Euphrates River, in southern
Mesopotamia, the Sumerians were a people who
lived from around 3500 B.C. to 1800 B.C.
Religion--Roots in worship of nature--wind
and water
Philosophy-- was the worlds first recorded
deep thinking Ex: Whoever has walked with
truth generates life.
Science--Credited with invention of wheel and
potter's wheel, and first writing system
Technology--tools, weapons, bags, scabbards,
etc.
Art-- smooth perfection, made in marble,
diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuli.
Many famous portraits and sculptures can be
found in museums across the globe.
Architecture-- Many religious buildings built SUMER WAS ONE OF THE FIRST LITERATE
CIVILIZATIONS LEAVING MANY RECORDS!

WAIT.. WHAT’S MESOPOTAMIA?
Mesopotamia gets its name from the
Tigris and Euphrates
rivers. "Mesopotamia" comes from two
Greek terms mesos, meaning 'middle'
and potamoi, 'rivers', so the name
literally means 'between the rivers. The
space we call Mesopotamia is nearly the
same as that of the country of Iraq.
Sumer, is found in the southern tip of
Mesopotamia
THE SUMERIANS GREW A LOT OF BARLEY,
CHICKPEAS, MILLET, WHEAT, DATES, AND
ONIONS. FARMING TOOK STAMINA, STRENGTH,
GOOD HEALTH, A BIT OF GOOD LUCK AND
ORGANIZATION.
THEY ALSO BUILT DAMS, TO HELP WITH
FLOODS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
THEY USED OXEN AS THEIR PRIMARY “BEASTS
OF BURDEN” AND DONKEYS AS THEIR PRIMARY
TRANSPORT ANIMAL.
THEY USED THE RIVERS TO THEIR
ADVANTAGE, FOR TRADE AND TRANSPORT.

SOCIAL
Social Classes..
 Upper class- Nobles, Priest, Government Officials and
Warriors.
 Middle Class- Merchants, Traders, “Freeman” Class.
 Low Class- Slavery.
 Practiced a patriarchal society, women were
given protection if they would submit to men having
all the authority.
A COUNCIL OF NOBLES MAINLY
GOVERNED CITY-STATES. ALSO AN
ASSEMBLY OF CITIZENS GOVERNED
POLITICAL AFFAIRS. LATER KINGS
AROUSE TO CLAIM THEMSELVES AS THE
MILITARY LEADERS AND THE HIGHEST
PRIEST IN THAT CITY-STATE
Jobs for the Sumerians included
pottery makers, stonecutters,
metal smiths, farmers, fishers,
shepherds, weavers, leatherworkers, and sailors.
The Sumerians also invented
mankind’s oldest “money”..
Shell money!
It has a hollow hole carved
though the middle.
