Course Description: A health-related work-based learning experience that enables
the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct
supervision is provided by the clinical professional. The student must pass both
RNSG 1533, 1126 and 2362 concurrently in order to be able to progress to the
Level III nursing courses.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student should demonstrate a master of the
following learning outcomes:
1. Apply knowledge of selected concepts to clinical situations.
2. Utilize clinical reasoning and knowledge based on the nursing program of
study to date and evidence-based practice outcomes as the basis for decision
making and safe patient-centered care for two to three clients in an acute
care setting.
3. Utilize a systematic process to develop concept maps to provide patientcentered care to diverse patients across the life span (including teaching,
referrals, etc.).
4. Implement measures to promote a safe environment for patients and others.
5. Demonstrate beginning collaboration and communication skills with diverse
patients, families and the interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate
care.
6. Demonstrate beginning skills in using patient care technologies and
information systems that support safe nursing practice.
7. Adhere to standards of practice within legal, ethical, and regulatory
frameworks of the professional nurse.
8. Demonstrate attributes of the professional nurse.
9. Identify delegation of nursing interventions to appropriate personnel.

A. In the Acute Care setting, the student is required to satisfactorily complete:
A. Two (2) Patient/Client assessments.
B. Introduction to Team Leading.
C. Develop and implement patient concept care maps for assigned
patients.
D. Develop and present an assigned healthcare concept utilizing
Evidence Based Practice in post conference.
E. Complete assigned focused concept activities and participated in
presentation and discussion during post-conference.
F. Document patient shift assessments and care of assigned patients
on Sim Chart and/or facility health record.
G. Complete 1 day in Clinic setting with preceptor.
H. Clinical Skills that should be checked off independently by end of
clinical:
1. Administer oral medications
2. Administer subcutaneous injections (insulin, anticoagulant);
all dosages must be verified by the instructor.
I. Clinical Skills that should be performed but not checked off
independently by the end of clinical (if skills are available at
facility assigned):
1. Administer two (2) intravenous piggy backs or
intermittent intravenous infusions (IVPB)
2. Administer one (1) intravenous push medication (IVP)
3. Perform one sterile procedure of some type (must don
sterile gloves)
B. In the Community setting, the student is required to satisfactorily complete:
A. Develop and perform 1 community health project.
B. Attend 1 community support group meeting.
C. Pediatric assessment
D. Vision and Hearing screening training
E. Diversity Formal Paper
C. Utilize Blackboard for course enhancement. The student must check the
postings on Blackboard for announcements, interactive assignments, and
email communication.

Failure to submit any written assignment on time will result in an automatic
deduction of 50% of the possible points. Completion of the assignment will
still be required for successful completion of the course. The deductions
received for late work will not fail a student but may decrease their grade to a
“B” or “C” unless formal disciplinary action has been taken for consistent late
work. See the Grading/Evaluation/Academic Progression Policy in the student
handbook for grading and progression information, and more information about
late work.
Clinical Performance
A. In the clinical settings, the student will be required to satisfactorily
demonstrate clinical competency according to Level II criteria on the clinical
evaluation tool and clinical objectives stated.

Cheating/Plagiarism:
Any student involved in lying, cheating, plagiarism, collusion or false
representation is in direct violation of the Health Occupations Division Honesty
Policy and the Trinity Valley Community College’s Policy of Rights, Conduct and
Responsibilities. Students must not share their own work with other students,
and those who do are subject to be charged with violation of the honesty
policy. It is considered cheating to receive information from peers or previous
students and use that information to answer questions on a test or complete an
assignment. Scholastic dishonesty jeopardizes the student’s successful completion
of a health occupations program. Violations of the honesty policy will result in a
contract being written or dismissal from the program. Students accused of
academic dishonesty will be afforded due process. The student’s right of appeal is
through the Vice-President of Student Services and the Disciplinary Committee.
Students who are dismissed from one health occupations program for violation of
this policy or not accepted into a health occupations program for violation of this
policy will not be allowed to enter or re-enter that program or enter another
program in the Health Occupations Division at Trinity Valley Community College

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to, cheating on a test,
plagiarism, and collusion. “Cheating on a test” shall include
(a) Copying from another student’s test paper
(b) Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the
test
(c) Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test
without permission from the test administrator
(d) Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or
in part, the contents of an un-administered test
(e) The unauthorized transporting or removal, in whole or in part, of the
contents of the unadministered test
(f) Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to
substitute for oneself, to take a test, and
(g) Bringing another person to obtain an unadministered test or
information about an unadministered test.
“Plagiarism” shall be defined as the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or
obtaining by any means another’s work and the unacknowledged submission or
incorporation of it in one’s own written work.
“Collusion” shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person
in preparing written work for fulfillment of course requirements.
Drop Policy:
Student Responsibility - When a student withdraws from the nursing program
he/she must also go to the Counselor’s office to withdraw from the college with a
grade of "W". If the student fails to do this, he/she will receive an "F" in the
course. The student must also complete the “Student Exit Form” found in the
handbook if dropping out or stopping out of the nursing program. Students
who drop out or stop out and do not complete this form will not be eligible for
readmission.
Research Resources:
The student is encouraged to use the TVCC Libraries as research resources for this
course. Students can search the TVCC Library Resource Center holdings through

the on-line catalog. Electronic library resources provide access to full-text and
abstract articles as well as links to a variety of remote research tools. The physical
library contains a specialized collection of research materials specifically chosen to
support the degrees and courses offered at TVCC. Students with research questions
or questions about library services are encouraged to email their question to
[email protected].
Technology Resources/Access:
Each student, employee, or guest with an information technology (IT) account are
responsible for all use of the account. All accounts shall be for use by a single
individual – the person for whom the account was approved or assigned. This
includes e-Course accounts as well as TVCC issued email accounts. Sharing or
loaning accounts is strictly prohibited and violates TVCC Board Policy CT
(LOCAL).
Student’s Responsibility:
This syllabus contains information, policies and procedures for a specific course.
By enrolling, the student agrees to read, understand, and abide by the rules,
policies, regulations, and ethical standards of Trinity Valley Community College
