Procedures, Guidelines and Standards
A procedure is a written instruction outlining the preferred method of performing a task or activity.
A WHS procedure will emphasise ways to minimise any risks or harm when doing a task. A procedure
outlines the potential hazards and associated control measures to be applied.
Procedures often include:







An action or task,
A description of action taken,
Standards,
who is responsible,
safety requirements,
step-by-step instructions, and
diagrams and flow charts
Guidelines do not have the authoritative advice and allow the user greater latitude in choosing the
options to best suit their circumstances. Guidance material includes:



interpretive guidelines,
guides, and
fact sheets.
Standards outline requirements such as:







Quality,
Performance,
construction design,
endurance,
time specificity,
systems or processes, and
certain hazards and mandated controls
The following is a list of suggested procedures, guidelines and standards to be developed for SAFE in
2016.
