TENAFLY HIGH SCHOOL COURSE PROFICIENCIES Course Title: Geometry Honors Semester: Fall Objectives Students will demonstrate the ability to: 1. use and interpret appropriate symbols of notation to communicate geometric ideas. 2. interpret and draw two and three dimensional objects. 3. write a two column proof, giving statements and reasons. 4. write a paragraph proof. 5. demonstrate an understanding of figures based upon information regarding angle and/or side measure. 6. identify midpoint and bisectors of a segment and the bisector of an angle. 7. understand and apply concepts of angle measure, including angle pair relationships. 8. state and use the addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, transitive and substitution properties for segments and angles. 9. identify opposite rays and vertical angles and use a congruence relation of vertical angles. 10. demonstrate the ability to identify congruent figures and understand and prove their properties in practical applications. 11. make and test a conjecture. 12. construct a simple, valid argument. 13. judge the validity of an argument. 14. formulate a counter-example. 15. understand and apply properties of lines and segments related to triangles. 16. identify median and altitude of a triangle and use their properties in proof involving congruent triangles. Course Title: Geometry Honors Semester: Fall Objectives Students will demonstrate the ability to: 17. classify triangles by side or angle measure. 18. state and use isosceles triangle theorems in proofs. 19. use angle relationships to prove lines parallel and conversely. 20. understand and apply concepts and principles relating to quadrilaterals and other polygons. 21. understand and apply the basic concepts related to points, lines, planes and space, including parallelism and perpendicularity. Course Title: Geometry Honors Semester: Spring Objectives Students will demonstrate the ability to: 22. prove two triangles congruent using AAS 23. state and use the No-Choice Theorem 24. solve problems involving interior and exterior angles of a polygon. 25. identify similar figures and understand and apply their properties. 26. prove triangles similar using AA, SSS, SAS and solve numerical problems using the properties of square roots. 27. state and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. 28. solve numerical problems involving special right triangles; 30-60-90 and 45-45-90. 29. understand and apply properties of lines, segments, angles and arcs related to circles. Course Title: Geometry Honors Semester: Spring Objectives Students will demonstrate the ability to: 30. understand and apply concepts of perimeter, circumference, area, surface area and volume. 31. find the ratio of areas of similar figures. 32. apply the principles of coordinate geometry to determine properties of geometric figures. 33. understand and apply simple reflections, rotations and translations; recognize their effects on geometric figures. 34. use computers, specifically Geometers’ Sketchpad, to discover and model geometric principles. 35. use calculators to enable students to work out real life applications. 36. use techniques of probability to solve simple problems. 37. apply trigonometric relationships to solve right triangles. 38. simplify and manipulate square roots.
