Coach cADLE’S Syllabus ADV. World History MHS-NGC 2016-2017 Jacob cADLE [email protected] Conference hours: Each day: 6th Period (936) 276-2001 Room extension:84126 Course description: Welcome to World History! We are beginning an exciting new year with a new group of young people. World History is the Social Studies component for the 10th grade and is a core subject. This course provides a look at the different cultural and societal aspects of History while also teaching students to properly examine primary and secondary documents. Upon completion of this course students will be able to analyze and put to use historical data from the following 5 themes: Interaction Between Humans and the Environment Development and Interaction of Cultures State-Building, Expansion and Conflict Creation, Expansion and Interaction of Economic Systems Development and Transformation of Social Structures Class Rules: 1. Be prepared and productive: It is important that students come to class with all of the materials that they need to learn including pen, spiral notebook, and other materials that students may be told that they need to bring from day to day. Take responsibility for your part in the learning process. 2. Be on time: the school provides plenty of time for students to change classes, even providing them with a one minute warning bell. The door to my room will be closed at the ringing of the second bell. Any student that has to open the door to enter will be considered tardy. 3. Be respectful: respect is the foundation of human interaction. Students are to respect each other, themselves, and the adults they interact with in the classroom including visitors, administration, substitutes and their instructor. 4. Students are responsible for all rules and regulations according to the MHS student handbook. Materials: 1. Textbook: The text we will be using this year is Traditions and Encounters: A Global Perspective 6th Edition. The text will be available in book form during class-time. Books may not be taken home from the classroom set. For homework, students will be told how to access the book online and may read or work on homework via the online version of the text. If the student wants a book to take home they have to go to Asst. Principal Mr. Duoto’s office where they may check out a book for personal use. This is on a first come-first serve basis. The student will be responsible for the text upon check out and replacement fees do apply if they should lose or damage the text. Almost all homework will involve reading, studying, or completing class work from this text. Students and parents are responsible for issued textbooks as outlined by district policy. 2. Students will need to bring a number 2 pencil and pen (blue or black ink only), and a set of map pencils to class each day. If a student wishes, they can bring a set of map pencils at the beginning of the year and they will be added to a collection “in common” which all students can use for map exercises and other purposes. 3. Students will need a three subject spiral notebook dedicated strictly to their World History Class. 4. Students will need to bring a pair of scissors, a roll or two of packing tape (the wide clear type) and if they want it, a small personal stapler. These will be used to create their class notebook. 5. If you are able, please send hand sanitizer, anti-bacteria wipes, and tissues. This will better enable both your student and faculty to remain healthier throughout the school year. Class Note Books: Students will be creating and keeping a World History “spiral”, or notebook. They will be required to come to class with this spiral every day. These spirals will be referred to throughout the year and contain ideas and concepts that will be used on quizzes, tests, and Finals. Students who lose their spirals will have to recreate them from a master copy. Daily and test grades will be given on the spiral based on the student having the spiral in class, maintaining the spiral properly, completing assignments and attaching them to the spiral, and having the spiral up to date with the master copy. Grades: Students will receive major grades, daily grades, and semester final grades (if applicable). Major grades count as 80% (Pre-AP) or 70% (regular) of a student’s grades. Since there may only be three or four major grades per six weeks it is imperative that students study for their tests. One major grade may consist of a participation grade. For this grade each student starts out with a 100, subtractions of 5 points per item are made for excessive talking, requesting more than three bathroom trips per six weeks, failure to bring homework to class, a violation of the posted class rules (there are only four, see above!). These are all elements that detract from a quality learning experience. Daily grades count for 20% of a student’s grade. Daily grades are given for quizzes (a quiz counts as two daily grades) and class work assignments labeled as non-major grades as declared by the instructor. MHS handbook policy in regards to make-up work and other grading issues will be strictly adhered to. The policy states: MHS handbook policy in regards to make-up work and other grading issues will be strictly adhered to including late work (work turned in after the due date for students who have not been absent) and make-up work for students who have missed class. Learning Experience: Students learn by different means, this class imparts information through lectures, PowerPoint presentations, videos, class discussion, creative activities, individual study, information/data analysis, and media/technology interaction. Current events topics will be emphasized and students are expected to be informed about national and international issues to the point where the standing homework order is “stay informed”. This year there is going to be a major focus on writing skills both in assignments and on exams. Please support the student and teacher in this endeavor. Welcome Bears! Let’s have a great school year!
