Foreword
This list of learning resources identifies resources that have been recommended by Saskatchewan
Learning to support the Grade 7 Mathematics Curriculum (2007). The list also offers suggestions,
where appropriate, for other grades that the resources will support. These resources form a high
quality collection that supports most of the learning outcomes of the Mathematics Curriculum. This
list will be updated as more curricula for the Middle Level are developed, and as new resources
become available.
For each grade, a collection of core (CORE) learning resources has been selected. These
resources form a high quality collection that supports the vast majority of the learning outcomes for
that particular grade. This list also includes additional recommended learning resources. When
purchasing resources from this list, it is advisable to select one of the comprehensive core resources
for each grade together with the in-depth and professional core learning resources, and other
learning resources of your choice. Where possible, the comprehensive resources should be
examined before final ordering decisions are made.
Manipulatives are an essential component of an effective mathematics program, leading to the
development of deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Included is a chart outlining the
types of manipulatives needed, the suggested uses, and the suggested quantity recommended
(where appropriate). Some manipulatives may be collected; others may be constructed; and many
may be purchased. The main distributors for these materials are Exclusive Educational Products
(www.exclusiveeducational.ca) and Spectrum Nasco Educational Supplies Ltd.
(www.spectrumed.com). Please consult these companies’ catalogues for purchasing information.
Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the Mathematics
Curricula. It remains the responsibility of teachers to preview and select materials that best meet the
needs of their school or community. These resources should be chosen in accordance with the
school divisions’s materials selection policy.

multiculturalism of mathematics. This kit

This resource series was developed in
partnership with the Yup’ik Inuit Elders in
Alaska and with the University of AlaskaFairbanks. It provides an authentic example
of ways to integrate Inuit content, to
incorporate cultural ways of knowing, and to
bridge gaps between different ways of
knowing and understanding. The series
includes cultural stories given by Elders. The
focus is on Alaska’s Yup’ik people. Students
from all cultural backgrounds should find the
activities engaging.
Note: Imperial measurements, along with
some metric measurements, are used. Also,
the term “Eskimo” appears instead of “Inuit,”
which is the culturally appropriate term in
Canada. Teachers are encouraged to use
and adapt the materials as needed to support
Saskatchewan’s mathematics curriculum.

Exploring Mathematics Through Literature:
Articles and Lessons for Prekindergarten

Using literature as the starting point for
mathematical explorations, this collection of
articles and lessons provides teachers with
numerous examples of how to build students’
understanding of mathematical concepts
effectively. The articles focus on five strands:
numbers and operations, algebra, geometry,
measurement and data analysis, and
probability. Many activities lend themselves
to small group and whole class discussions.
Varied instructional strategies encourage
students to utilize and develop critical and
creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills,
and mathematical reasoning abilities.
Recording sheets facilitate the collection of
data and the organization of students’
thinking. Many of the literature suggestions
may be found in school or public library
collections. Teachers are encouraged to use
this resource as a stepping stone to using
other high-quality literature as the basis for
mathematical explorations.

of a student resource, a teacher’s guide, and
editable blackline masters available on the
accompanying CD-ROM. The student
resource contains 12 units of study. Each unit
begins with a problem called a Math Link that
connects math and the real world. Lessons
follow the basic format of explore or discuss,
reflect, review key ideas, communicate,
practise, apply, and extend. At the end of
each unit there is a chapter review, a practice
test, a wrap up of the chapter problem, and a
page of math games. Additionally, there is a

Niktu: A Game of Algebraic Thinking
Series

Annotation
Each level of this game offers a progressively
more advanced review of algebraic concepts
within a small group setting. Each playing
card contains an algebraic equation with a
missing numeral. Players take turns rolling a
die and substituting the rolled number for the
missing variable. They attempt to solve the
equation before the timer runs out. Players
compare answers using their communication
skills and critical and creative thinking to
justify and explain their answers. The
resulting discussion also provides the teacher
with a window into students’ thought
processes and level of understanding.
Concepts addressed include order of
operations, inverse operations, fractional
values, and integers. Variations for each
game are included.

North America (Changing the Faces of
Mathematics Series)

(CORE) This resource is a collection of
essays related to teaching mathematics in a
culturally relevant way to First Nations people
of North America. It is devoted to discussing
ways of helping First Nations students make
meaningful connections between school
mathematics and their culture. The authors
stress the need to present mathematical
concepts within the context of daily life
scenarios, and they illustrate ways to involve
students in culturally related mathematical
activities. Examples include suggestions for
teaching numbers and operations concepts
using traditional games, and for introducing
students to a variety of number systems
specific to North American First Nations
people. Many geometrical concepts and
patterns are immersed in culturally relevant
arts and crafts. Some activities lend
themselves to co-operative group or partner
work, while others are better structured as
independent study. An excellent section on
portfolios and the paradigm shift in
mathematics assessment is included.

multiculturalism of mathematics while
promoting deep understanding,

Salmon Fishing offers the perspectives of a
Yup’ik subsistence fisher. Knowledge of the
salmon’s life cycle, how to fish, and where to
fish, determine the probability of catching fish.
The module embeds Yup’ik cultural values,
and introduces Yup’ik games of chance to
further explore concepts of probability and
fairness. Cultural notes, teacher notes, math
notes, and assessment ideas offer
instructional support. This resource facilitates
connections to and integration with other
subject areas.

This resource series was developed in
partnership by the Yup’ik Inuit Elders in
Alaska and with the University of AlaskaFairbanks. It provides an authentic example
of ways to integrate Inuit content, to
incorporate cultural ways of knowing, and to
bridge gaps between different ways of
knowing and understanding. The series
includes cultural stories given by Elders. The
focus is on Alaska’s Yup’ik people. Students
from all cultural backgrounds should find the
activities engaging.
Note: Imperial measurements, along with
some metric measurements, are used. Also,
the term “Eskimo” appears instead of “Inuit,”
which is the culturally appropriate term in
Canada. Teachers are encouraged to use
and adapt the materials as needed to support
Saskatchewan’s mathematics curriculum.

Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi:
A Math Adventure

Annotation
Suffering from a stomachache, Sir
Cumference mistakenly drinks a magic
remedy that transforms him into a dragon. His
son, Radius, valiantly searches the castle for
the cure. His quest for the magic number that
is the same for all circles (pi) involves
determining the diameter and circumference
of various circular objects. Radius, while
measuring a fruit pie, discovers the ratio of a
circle’s circumference to its diameter and the
king is returned to his human form. It is
declared that henceforth pie with an e will be
for eating and pi without an e will be the name
of this number for all things round. This
medieval tale provides a clever introduction to
the irrational number pi. Because the story
uses Imperial measurements it is important
that students be given opportunities to
conduct similar measurement activities using
the metric system.

Arthur finally determines that the circle is the
perfect shape for a table. To celebrate, the
king aptly renames his group of trusted
knights as the Knights of the Round Table.
Humorous mathematical puns and geometric
definitions are combined in this clever tale.
