Pinehurst Mid Term Plan Subject: History Ancient Egypt No. of weeks Autumn 1 Year Group Yr 3/4 Class Subject content (National Curriculum) Key Stage 2 In addition, across Key Stages 2 and 3, pupils should be taught the essential chronology of Britain’s history. This will serve as an essential frame of reference for more in-depth study. Pupils should be made aware that history takes many forms, including cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history. Pupils should be taught about key dates, events and significant individuals. They should also be given the opportunity to study local history. Pupils should be taught about: 1. The achievements of the earliest civilisations. 2. An overview of where and when the first civilisations appeared. 3. A depth study of Ancient Egypt. Activities: 1. Introduction to Ancient Egypt: To place Ancient Egyptians on a timeline of other ancient civilisations and British history. Label a map of Ancient Egypt and its surroundings. Locate the Fertile Crescent and identify the countries in that area today. Describe the physical and human geography of Ancient Egypt. To be able to describe the end of the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. To appreciate the evidence for the Ancient Egypt civilisation that can still be seen today. To research material for and make notes for a debate, then contribute to a debate. 2. Egyptologists: Understand that the Ancient Egyptians wrote in hieroglyphs. Research and make notes on the life of Jean Francois Champollion; write a biography of fact file about Champollion. Study the finding of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. Understand some of the techniques used and careful sketches and drawings to record details of artefacts found were recorded. Look and name some of the more important Ancient Egypt sites. 3. Pharaohs and Pyramids: To understand who the pharaohs were and place pharaohs and dynasties on timeline. Study and compare the lives of some of the well-known pharaohs – research a well-known pharaoh – write fact file/biography of a wellknown pharaoh. To discover which Ancient Egyptian pharaohs did well in battle and describe the weapons and style of warfare that they used – design and make an Ancient Egyptian chariot. To describe the development of pyramids – build mastabas and pyramids using Lego bricks and nets. Understand the enormity of the task for the pyramid builders – plan and carry out an enquiry to find the best way of moving blocks up a ramp. To understand that during the New Kingdom the Ancient Egyptians no longer buried their pharaohs in pyramids, but instead in rock-cut tombs in the Valley of the Kings. To describe some aspects of Ancient Egyptian history to an audience and show understanding of historical concepts and the connections between the various aspects of Ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptian Tombs: To use their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs to aid their construction of a model tomb – begin the process of making and Egyptian tomb. Mythology: To know Ancient Egyptian creation story and understand that there are many versions of the story – compare different versions of the Ancient Egyptian creation story (myth) and retell the story. Appreciate that the Ancient Egyptians used these myths to try to explain the world around them – draw scenes from the story of Isis, Osiris, Horus and Seth in the style of the Ancient Egyptians. To understand the many gods and goddesses could be recognised by different symbols – plan and make an Ancient Headdress. To understand the purpose of Ancient Egyptian temples and describe the basic function of priests – importance of festival – create a life size sarcophagus as a class. Daily life: To describe the structure and layout of an Ancient Egyptian house and garden – understand the significance of water in their gardens – create a picture of an Ancient Egyptian house and garden/make a clay model of a house and garden. To understand the range of activities carried out by Ancient Egyptian women on a daily basis – make a simple water clock. To understand the range of foods eaten by Ancient Egyptians and list ingredients in their diets – prepare some Ancient Egyptian foods and taste foods similar to those eaten then. Describe the range of jobs carried out by men and understand the social hierarchy indicated by jobs men carried out – label illustrations to show understanding of the jobs carried out, including descriptions of the tools they used. Describe the clothes and footwear worn by men, women and children and what they were make from – design and make some clothes for a fashion doll. Look at makeup, wigs and jewellery – create some jewellery for the fashion doll and themselves. Understand that not many people learnt to read or write – find out how papyrus was made and used and learn the Ancient Egyptian numbering system. Find out how they spent their leisure time and compare the activities with today. The Nile: To understand the vital role of the Nile for the Ancient Egyptians and know that they regarded the river as a god – locate and describe key features of the River Nile. Explain the importance the Nile was for farmers – design and make a model shaduf. Discuss the animal they raised and the crops they grew and describe a typical Egyptian farm – plan and make a model Ancient Egyptian farm. Understand that boats on the River Nile were the main transport system – describe and explain their uses – plan and give a presentation about the importance of the River Nile to the Ancient Egyptians.
