Journal #16 Genetic Social Studies May 16/19, 2008 Gregor Mendel…Reginald C. Punnett… Karl Correns…Walther Flemming… Walter Sutton… Thomas Hunt Morgan… Hugo DeVries… James Watson…Francis Crick…Rosalind Franklin… Ian Wilmut…Barbara McClintock No, this isn’t a list of the people on a new reality T.V. show. It’s a list of the people of “Genetic Social Studies” or, in other words, the people throughout history that have been responsible for some of greatest discoveries in the area of GENETICS! So, as we begin our investigation of those very discoveries, it is essential that we FIRST investigate and pay homage to the people that made it possible for us to understand the science of GENETICS! YOUR ASSIGNMENT: 1) Out of the twelve scientists listed above, pick one of them. For the most part, they are listed in chronological order of their discoveries. 2) On a separate sheet of paper, write/type a few sentences about his/her contribution to the science of GENETICS. Include in your description his/her field of study (e.g. botany, zoology, etc.), his/her major discovery, how he/she made his/her discovery, and when he/she made that discovery. 3) Create a caricature and nickname for him/her on the BACK of this piece of paper. Make your caricature and nickname reflect his/her field of study and what he/she contributed to the science of GENETICS. If you do your drawing in pencil, please go over it with black marker and/or color it in. Neatness, effort, and insightful interpretation of the scientist and his/her discovery are critical to the success of your caricature – NOT “HOW WELL YOU DRAW!” 4) The internet will be helpful in your quest to fulfill this genetic and historical reflection! If you would like to borrow a genetics textbook from Mrs. P for this assignment, please let her know! THIS IS DUE TUESDAY (5/27)!
