Unit Title: “Unit 2 Rocks and Minerals”
Unit Essential Question (UEQ): How do different types of rocks form and change over time?
Find a rock that interests you, and find out everything you
possibly can about it. In a written paper, following the questions
and outline below, present information in an informative essay.
Prepare a creative museum-style display for you rock.
Appearance of Rock
Student was creative with pet rock décor. A theme is
recognized or evident. Student showed exceptional work in
originality, layout and neatness.
Where did you meet your pet rock?
Begin by writing a detailed description of the site, it may hold
clues to your rock’s origin. Be sure to tell if it was broken off
a ledge, or just loose on the ground. Was it near a stream?
Was in found in a ditch. Where did the ditch begin and end?
What is the physical appearance of your rock?
Color, texture or layering, mass, volume, density
How was your rock formed?
Is your rock igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic?
Describe how rocks of this type are formed?
What minerals is your rock made of?
What are the characteristics of the minerals your rock is
made from? Research what minerals normally make up this
kind of rock.
What is the name of your pet rock?
Name of rock and pet rock’s name are related. Example:
Flint rock-dressed up as Fred Flintstone. Sandstonedressed as a girl name Sandy
Where will your pet rock be when it celebrates its 100 th
birthday and its 1000th birthday?
Take your rock through at least two different paths of the
rock cycle to form two entirely different rock. Describe each
step in detail (ex. I was weathered, which means I was
broken down into tiny pieces.) Make sure to include each
step of the cycle in detail.
 Vocabulary to include in your writing – MUST INCLUDE
AT LEAST 10 OF THESE WORDS: igneous rock, magma,
lava, sedimentary rock, sediment, weathering, erosion,
deposition, compaction, cementation, lithification,
metamorphic rock, heat and pressure, cooling (cools),
