Lesson Date 8/14 STATE STANDARDS (GLE or CCSS): Explain ways in which goals, cultures, interests, inventions, and technological advances have affected people’s perceptions and uses of places or regions in world history (3,4) KEY POINTS: Civilization - a group of people that share a political structure, economy, religion, social structure, intellectual achievements, and culture PERSIC – the mnemonic device for the characteristics of a civilization Sumer was the first civilization in Mesopotamia, which itself was called ‘the cradle of civilization’ PROVE IT: 10 mins See below. DIRECTIONS: You have just arrived in Mesopotamia! Your job is to dig up artifacts and learn about the Sumerian civilization thousands of years ago. You are trying to prove that Sumer was a civilization by using PERSIC. RTI & MODIFICATIONS: Modified prove it: same questions, with sentence starters. Use of notes during prove it. PUSHING 4.0 EXTENSION: Fire article CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING: Checking that all studnets have identified each artifact as applying to correct part of PERSIC. Scan annotations during GP and IP to make sure students are picking out pertinent information. (mime putting on glasses and archaeologist hat) Identify artifact 1 using the caption. Teacher guides class through analysis of artifact 1. Using bolded key words from the text, students decide which part of PERSIC this artifact applies to. Label the artifact (1 is social structure) then read and annotate the paragraph to gather information to answer the Social Structure questions in the chart. Model heavily effective note-taking in chart. For artifact 2, students try independently, but teacher pauses work to make sure all students have identified the artifact as applying to political structure. Students turn and talk after completing artifact 2, and teacher cold calls to check answers before moving into IP. IP: 15 Students work independently on artifacts 3-6. Teacher checks at end of worktime to make sure all students have identified the categories correctly. Sumerians – people who live in Mesopotamia Artifact 1: _____________________________________ Archeologists, people who study artifacts to learn about people in history, have found that there were several classes of people in Mesopotamia. At the top was the upper class made up of priests, land owners and government officials. In the middle was the common class which included farmers, fishermen and other people who made crafts. At the bottom were slaves. Seen here is a picture of a priest in Mesopotamia. Priests were in the highest class. Artifact 2: _____________________________________ Mesopotamia was ruled by a king. People in Mesopotamia believed that their kings were very powerful and chosen by the gods to rule the place. Kings in Mesopotamia enforced the laws and collected taxes. They built temples and made sure irrigation systems were maintained. A king was also in charge of the army. Under Kings, were governors who ruled over smaller towns. Seen here is a carving of a Mesopotamian King, Gilgamesh. This carving is in a temple wall in modern day Iran. Artifact 3: _____________________________________ People in Mesopotamia expressed their religious beliefs by building temples and religious towers called ziggurats. They believed that their gods lived at the top of the ziggurat. People in Mesopotamia believed that the gods were pleased when people showed them devotion, love or obedience. They also had all kinds of religious ceremonies. Ziggurats were huge stone temples made for the gods. They were so large they could be seen from over 20 miles away. Artifact 4: _____________________________________ People in Mesopotamia developed a system of money so they could buy and sell goods they made. Sumerians made coins such as these seen to the left from gold, silver, or bronze. Coins had different worth. People would pay their taxes using coins such as these. Coins often had symbols on them. Seen here is a god and on the left is a bull featured on the coin. Artifact 5: _____________________________________ Sumerians arts included creative forms of expression such as painting, architecture and music. There were many kinds of artists and crafts people. Music was also important. The people believed that music brought joy to the gods and people alike. Musicians played instruments such as the drums and pipes. This fancy lyre (harp) has the head of a bull decorating it. A musician would strum the strings to play musical notes. Artifact 6: _____________________________________ Sumerians were the first to invent a system of writing. Sumerians called their written language, cuneiform. Sumerians developed cuneiform around 2,400 B.C.E. The earliest examples of cuneiform show that it was used to record information about the daily life of Sumerians. Later, Cuneiform would be used for many purposes. Here is a cuneiform tablet. Writes carved letters into a soft clay tablet to record information.
