CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING:
Checking that all studnets have identified each
artifact as applying to correct part of PERSIC.
Scan annotations during GP and IP to make
sure students are picking out pertinent
information.
(mime putting on glasses and archaeologist hat)
Identify artifact 1 using the caption. Teacher guides class through analysis
of artifact 1. Using bolded key words from the text, students decide which
part of PERSIC this artifact applies to. Label the artifact (1 is social
structure) then read and annotate the paragraph to gather information to
answer the Social Structure questions in the chart. Model heavily effective
note-taking in chart.
For artifact 2, students try independently, but teacher pauses work to
make sure all students have identified the artifact as applying to political
structure. Students turn and talk after completing artifact 2, and teacher
cold calls to check answers before moving into IP.
IP: 15
Students work independently on artifacts 3-6. Teacher checks at end of

EXAMINE THE EVIDENCE!
Sumerians – people who live in Mesopotamia
Artifact 1: _____________________________________
Archeologists, people who study artifacts to learn about people in history,
have found that there were several classes of people in Mesopotamia.
At the top was the upper class made up of priests, land owners and
government officials. In the middle was the common class which included
farmers, fishermen and other people who made crafts. At the bottom
were slaves.
Seen here is a picture of a
priest in Mesopotamia. Priests
were in the highest class.
Artifact 2: _____________________________________
Mesopotamia was ruled by a king. People in Mesopotamia believed that their
kings were very powerful and chosen by the gods to rule the place. Kings in
Mesopotamia enforced the laws and collected taxes. They built temples and
made sure irrigation systems were maintained. A king was also in charge of the
army. Under Kings, were governors who ruled over smaller towns.
Seen here is a carving of a
Mesopotamian King, Gilgamesh. This
carving is in a temple wall in
modern day Iran.
Artifact 3:
_____________________________________
People in Mesopotamia expressed their religious
beliefs by building temples and religious towers
called ziggurats. They believed that their gods lived at
the top of the ziggurat. People in Mesopotamia believed that the gods were pleased when people
showed them devotion, love or obedience. They also had all kinds of religious ceremonies.
Ziggurats were huge stone temples made
for the gods. They were so large they
could be seen from over 20 miles away.
Artifact 4: _____________________________________
People in Mesopotamia developed a system of money
so they could buy and sell goods they made. Sumerians
made coins such as these seen to the left from gold,
silver, or bronze. Coins had different worth. People would
pay their taxes using coins such as these.
Coins often had symbols on them.
Seen here is a god and on the left
is a bull featured on the coin.
Artifact 5: _____________________________________
Sumerians arts included creative forms of expression such as
painting, architecture and music. There were many kinds of artists
and crafts people. Music was also important. The people believed
that music brought joy to the gods and people alike. Musicians played
instruments such as the drums and pipes.
This fancy lyre (harp) has the head
of a bull decorating it. A musician
would strum the strings to play
musical notes.
Artifact 6: _____________________________________
Sumerians were the first to invent a system of writing.
Sumerians called their written language, cuneiform.
Sumerians developed cuneiform around 2,400 B.C.E. The
earliest examples of cuneiform show that it was used to
record information about the daily life of Sumerians. Later, Cuneiform would be used for many
purposes.
Here is a cuneiform tablet. Writes
carved letters into a soft clay
tablet to record information.
