Collinear points- points that lie on a line Coplanar points- points that lie in the same plane Noncoplanar points- points that do not lie in the same plane Opposite rays-two rays that have a common endpoint and form a line Postulate- statement that is accepted as true without proof Coordinate- a number on a ruler that corresponds to a point Distance (between points)- absolute value of the difference of the coordinates Tick marks- marks used to show segments are congruent Construction-making a fairly exact replica of a given figure using a compass and straight edge Between (two points)- a point is between two points only if the point is on the same line as the two points Midpoint (of a segment)-point that divides the segment into two congruent segments Bisect- divide into two congruent parts Straight Angles- angle with measure 180° Angle bisector- ray that divides an angle into two congruent angles Adjacent angles- two angles in the same plane with a common vertex and a common side but no common interior points Linear pair (of angles)- a pair of adjacent angles whose noncommon sides are opposite rays. Complementary angles- two angles whose measures have a sum of 90° Supplementary angles- two angles whose measures have a sum of 180° Vertical angles- two nonadjacent angles formed by interesting lines Legs- sides of a right triangle that form the right angle Hypotenuse-side of a right triangle opposite the right angle Transformation- change in the position, size or shape of a figure Preimage- original figure Image- resulting figure Reflection- transformation where the image “flips” across a line of reflection. Rotation- transformation where the figure “turns” around a point called the center of rotation Translation- transformation where the all points in the figure “slide” in the same direction
