21st Century Instructional Guide for Career Technical Education Database Management Business and Marketing Cluster Microsoft Computer Applications Specialist Concentration Title: Database Management (WVEIS 1427) Standard Number: BE.S.DMGT.1 Essential Question: Objectives: BE.O.DMGT.1 Database Basics Students will evaluate the purposes, functions, and features of databases. BE.O.DMGT.1.2 BE.O.DMGT.1.3 understand database terminology. utilize elements of the database window. BE.O.DMGT.1.4 explore ethical issues, such as privacy and security. Why use a database? Students will define a database and its uses. Learning Plan & Notes to Instructor: Students will create an electronic collage of the common everyday uses of databases. Using student responders, students will evaluate various computer applications to determine if a database would fit that application. Access the web site www.scsite.com (version used in classroom) for crossword puzzle and interactive activities of database terminology. Create a bingo game of frequently used terms in database. With a partner, students will develop electronic screen shots of database elements utilizing drawing tools to label database elements. Students will create a small database of patients for a simulated medical clinic protected for privacy and password protected. Students will complete a webquest about ethical issues concerning privacy and security of data.
