LETTERS OF
RECOMMENDATION
I would like to recommend, whole heartedly, the services of Oliver Payne and his capabilities in the
world of music. Oliver worked closely with my writing partner (Nicholas Lloyd-Webber) and I on
our adaptation of The Little Prince, at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast - from late October, through to the
premiere on the 3rd of December.
Oliver executed his duties as: assistant Musical Director, choir master and notator with aplomb and
efficiency. It was a large task to undertake, as we were always pushed for time, but, nonetheless
Oliver's contributions were highly valued. There is no mistaking his musical talent and intuition
but, it should also be noted that Oliver's character and attitude are second to none. He is an
amiable, pleasant and conscientious individual who I am proud to not only call a colleague but
also a friend. Once again, I cannot recommend Oliver highly enough.
- Nick Lloyd Webber & James D. Reid (composers)
I am writing to give my most enthusiastic recommendation for Oliver Payne. He would be a great
asset to any team. I worked with Oliver Payne for five weeks at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, during
the production of The Little Prince. He carried the title of Assistant MD. Oliver's encyclopaedic
knowledge of orchestration, harmony, transcription, people skills and enthusiasm are unmatched.
He is also an accomplished and talented pianist. I have never met anyone with such meticulous
organisational skills and sheer ability to just "get things done”.
Oliver has a keen ear for detail and the ability to juggle the needs and projects of many people at
once. He was truly invested in the work of everyone at our theatre, and in the success of the show
as a whole. It goes without saying that Oliver Payne would have an immediate and positive impact
as an Assistant MD at any musical production. He is bright and capable and a pleasure to work
with.
- Vincent Guibert (musical director)
Recently I had the very great pleasure of working with Oliver Payne on a new musical adaptation
of The Little Prince by Antoine de St Exupery with music and lyrics by Nicholas Lloyd Webber and
James D Reid. Despite Ollie not being long out of his training he exuded a professionalism and
showed enormous natural skill for musical direction. He is a great communicator with actors and
was able to very clearly work through harmonies and problems cast members were having. This
ensured they were confident and at ease with what they were singing and freed them up to
develop wonderful characters and performances.
Ollie’s natural charm and warmth meant he was able to deal with the broad range of personalities
we had in our cast and his adaptability ensured he was able to work with different cast members
ways of working and their understanding of material. Nothing was ever too much to ask Ollie to do
and he often showed superb initiative taking cast members who weren’t on call away to work
through sections of the score. He has a very positive energy in a rehearsal room and is happy to
join in with creative decisions and put ideas forward for how a section might work.
Ollie worked phenomenally hard on orchestrating the score with Nick and the results were
glorious. It was also lovely to hear Ollie playing his own music on the piano before cast and crew
arrived for rehearsals and to see him help cast members prepare for auditions they had coming up.
A kind hearted and true gentleman. I couldn’t recommend Ollie highly enough and look forward
to bringing him back to Belfast as soon as possible.
- Richard Croxford (director)
