Karma Rinpoche, trained in the monastic tradition of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism
will dance the Mecham Fire Dance in Asia Pacific at 1:15 p.m. The Fire Dance is a ceremonial dance
involving hand gestures and a three (3) fold meditation practice of visualization of the deity, recitation of
mantra and meditative concentration which is called Gar. Gar is the specific features of a specific dance.
Visualization of the ground as a mandala is considered a Gar dance.
During the dance, Karma Rinpoche will be dressed in cloth that represents tiger skin, wear a wrathful
mask and carry a piece of wood in his hands which is on fire. He will invoke the deities of the tantric
teachings and through their power and blessings, misfortunes are removed in the city where the dance is
being performed as well as purify negativities that people in the audience are experiencing. He will be
available in the ‘Bhutan’ booth located in Asia Pacific West Pavilion to answer your questions about
Bhutanese culture, a country rich in tradition, diverse landscape, arts and architecture, flora and fauna,

The teachings on the Five Elements (i.e., Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth) are an essential aspect of the
Vajrayana path of Tantric Buddhism. This fact is easily witnessed through the Elements' primordial
integration with the Buddha Families themselves. In order to introduce practitioners to these sacred
teachings, Karma Rinpoche will focus on the relationship of the Elements to the health of the human
body, and on our harmonization with environmental forces, understood in terms of those local spirits who
may bring peace or strife to our "natural" world, both personally and collectively. These teachings are
fundamental for any effective environmental activism and to the well-being of sentient life in general.
