1 Placement Specialist Cardiac Services Educational Link Sister: 0161 276 4657 Welcome to the specialist cardiac Nursing Services (SCS) in the Manchester Heart Centre. Our highly skilled and experienced team of specialist nurses hopes that you enjoy your placement experience. Each area in the SCS has its own learning objectives to help you to develop and get the most out of your experience, we also encourage you to ask lots of questions and get involved in the clinical activities, with supervision. During your placement you will spend time with some of the different teams in the Specialist Cardiac Nurse service: Acute Chest Pain Nurses Adult congenital Heart disease Nurse Arrhythmia nurses Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses Heart Failure Nurses Interventional Cardiology specialist Nurses Research Nurses Within this placement you will have the opportunity to find out how patients live with a severe and life threatening illness by following the patient‘s journey. Team Mentoring occurs in this area, in each nurse specialty you will have an associate mentor in and an overall mentor to guide you through your placement, however, everyone is here to support and guide you through your placement. 2 Introduction to Placement area Placement layout The Specialist Cardiac Services department houses many different services all in the Manchester Heart Centre Purple zone first floor. During your placement you will see how patients are affected by severe and life threatening illness in both acute and chronic stages by following their journey through the services. Induction During your first day you will be orientated to the department inclusion of MHC Health and Safety issues will be covered (this does not replace your placement orientation checklist). 3 Placement Philosophy To demonstrate the understanding at all times of the impact that a life threatening diagnosis will have on the patient/client and their family. Always seek to demonstrate awareness of the wishes of the patient/family with a life threatening illness, relating to personal dignity, respect and privacy. To demonstrate skill in the undertaking of holistic assessment patient’s physical and psychosocial needs including their spiritual and emotional needs. To support the students own psychosocial needs in an environment where death and dying are recurring features of professional intervention and emotional well- being during times of crisis. 4 Staff Facilities and Break Allocation Within the Trust, there are canteens, cafeterias and shops, etc. However, most people bring in their own food and eat in the office. You are welcome to use the kitchen /eating area too, which has a fridge & microwave that you are welcome to use. There is a male and female changing area; you can store coats and bags in the office area. You may secure your valuables in the office area in a locked draw. The CMFT Library: 0161 276 4344 5 Handover / Shift Patterns The hours worked by most of the nurses here are Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm; however there are some variations which will be negotiated with individual nurse teams. Each area within the Specialist Nurse Service has resources available for you to use including; reference materials, DVD’s, hand-outs, patient information. Access to the Manchester Heart Centre education resource via computer terminal can be negotiated in each service.
