The Specialist Cardiac Services department houses
many different services all in the Manchester Heart
Centre Purple zone first floor. During your placement
you will see how patients are affected by severe and life
threatening illness in both acute and chronic stages by
following their journey through the services.

inclusion of MHC Health and Safety issues will be covered
(this does not replace your placement orientation checklist).
3
Placement Philosophy To demonstrate the understanding at all times of the impact
that a life threatening diagnosis will have on the patient/client
and their family. Always seek to demonstrate awareness of the
wishes of the patient/family with a life threatening illness,
relating to personal dignity, respect and privacy. To
demonstrate skill in the undertaking of holistic assessment
patient’s physical and psychosocial needs including their
spiritual and emotional needs. To support the students own
psychosocial needs in an environment where death and dying
are recurring features of professional intervention and
emotional well- being during times of crisis.

Handover / Shift
Patterns
The hours worked by most of the nurses here are Monday to
Friday 8am - 4pm; however there are some variations which
will be negotiated with individual nurse teams.
We aim to try and provide as much continuity within your
timetable to work with your mentor and gain experience with
the different nurse teams whilst balancing this with the
university days and practice based placement days over your
five week placement.
