Sun
Wood, coal, petroleum and natural
gas come from the sun. The USA gets 90% of
its energy from fossil fuel.
Energy is the ability to do work
 Can take the shape of many different
forms.
Two Categories: Kinetic or Potential
 Kinetic Energy is energy of motion– of waves,
electrons, atoms, molecules, substances and
objects
 Potential Energy is stored energy and the
energy of position– gravitational energy.
There are several forms of potential energy
Types of Potential Energy

Burning is a chemical change
Our bodies use food and give off energy
in the form of body heat.
 An adult radiates heat energy equal to
100 W light bulb.
All the energy that is transferred through
living organisms.
Mechanical Energy (potential)
Stored in objects by tension
Compressed springs and stretched
rubber bands are examples of
stored mechanical energy.
Sometimes known as elastic
energy.
Nuclear Energy (potential)
-stored in an atom’s nucleus
Fusion- the combining of nuclei
Ex. The sun or any star
Fission- the splitting of a nucleus
Like in the bombs or nuclear
reactors
Gravitational Energy (Potential)
Energy stored in an object’s height.
The higher and heavier the object, the
more gravitational energy is stored.
When you ride a bicycle down a steep hill
and pick up speed, gravitational energy is
being converted to motion energy.

Thermal Energy

movement of thermal energy is heat
Measured by temperature
Temperature is a measure of how
much thermal energy (or heat) is in
matter
Types of Kinetic Energy
Motion Energy
energy stored in the movement of objects.
 The faster they move, the more energy is
stored.
 It takes energy to get an object moving, and
energy is released when an object slows
down.
 Wind is an example of motion energy.

