6th Grade Ancient World History Regina Leeds Teacher “It is thrifty to prepare today for the wants of tomorrow”-Aesop Standards: The study of ancient world history helps to make the present more intelligible. Through the study of ancient world history, the students will learn both about the interaction of societies and the impact of individuals and groups on ancient events and ways of life. Through the study of the ancient world history, students develop knowledge and understanding of similarities and differences between the various societies of the ancient past and the factors affecting change and continuity in human affairs. The study of ancient world history will contribute to students’ education introducing them to a wide range of religious beliefs and customs, ideologies from other cultures. Ancient world history will broaden the knowledge to encourage students to develop an appreciation and understanding of different views and makes them aware of how these views contribute to individuals and group actions. Goals: The study of the ancient world history enables students to gain knowledge and understanding historical skills, values, and attitudes essential to an appreciation of the ancient world to develop a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for the ancient world history and to prepare for informed and active citizenship in the existing world. In this course of study will focus on the beginning of civilization as we know it. Students will study ancient empires and see how they helped in the development of future actions in history. Course Calendar: Textbook Each of the textbook chapters is actually its own special area in history. Students will use the components of a Civilization: Government, Religion, Writing, Social Structure, and Art. Assignments : While this is a class discussion based class, the following assignments will be used to evaluate student achievement. Grading Policy: Class Participation 10%. Students are expected to behave appropriately in class and seek to participate in class discussion. I expect respect and each student prepared for class. Journals- students will be required to journal in my class. They will write what they have learned through class discussion that day. Quizzes: 30%. We will have quizzes to check for knowledge of subject being taught. These will be weekly. Vocabulary Tests: To better understand the content in ancient world history, vocabulary tests will be given to enhance the learning of the topic . Tests: 30%. There will be an exam at the end of each chapter to check for student comprehension of the subject matter. A study guide will be given before each test. Extra Credit: When students receive their study guide, you , the parent, can sign and return the day of test and student will receive 5 bonus points. So PLEASE sign your child’s study guide. Also, the day before the test, Iwill go over possible questions that I will ask on the test for bonus. It is the student’s responsibility to write them down. Objectives: The students will learn the characteristics of the ancient world culture. Analyze political systems to derive their power, establish order, achieve goals, and view rights and responsibilities of citizens. The students will also see how geographical factors had an impact on the development of nations and historical events or historical conditions. The student will see the impact of technology on the lives of ancient people and how this assisted in the development of nations or societies and nations. Curriculum Topics: These are the topics the students will learn in Ancient World history. Unit One: The early civilizations. 1. Early Humans 2. Mesopotamian Civilizations 3. First Empires. Unit Two: Ancient Egypt. 1. Nile River Valley 2. Egypts Kingdoms 3. Egyptian Empire 4. The Civilization of the Kush Unit Three: Ancient Israelites 1. The first Israelites 2. The Kingdom of Israel 3. Growth of Judaism Unit Four: Ancient World the Greeks. 1. Early Greeks 2. Sparta and Athens 3. Persia attacks the Greeks 4. Age of Pericles Unit Five: The Greek Civilization 1. The Culture of Ancient Greece 2. Greek Philosophy and history 3. Alexander the Great 4. Spread of the Greek Culture Unit Six: Early India 1. India’s Early Civilization 2. Hinduism and Buddhism 3. India’s first Empires Unit 7: Early China 1. China’s first civilizations 2. Life in Ancient China 3. Qin and Han Dynasties Unit 8: New empires and faiths. 1. The Rise of Rome 2. Rome’s beginnings 3. The Roman Republic 4. The Fall of the Republic 5. The early empire Unit 9: Roman Civilization 1. Life in Ancient Rome 2. The fall of Rome 3. Byzantine Empire.
