Civil War Rap
Lyrics by Sean Healey
Part I – Th e Causes
The War Between the States, it wasn't a game
Regional differences were to blame
Economies based on different things
Both North and South were craving bling
Sla-ve-ry dominated the South
Cash crops feeding every mouth
But way up North, life wasn't the same
Their economy had a different name
On industry they did base
Jobs were given to every race
(Chorus)
C-i-v-i-l War - Seven years and four score
C-i-v-i-l War - Thousands dead and injured more
Some in the South would say
That slavery was their only way
Johnny Brown led a raid
On Harper's Ferry his hopes were laid
There the slaves he planned to arm
So they could rebel and their masters harm
Abolitionists did oppose
Slaves working and hoeing rows
Freedom for them they did want
And in publications they did taunt
(Chorus)
Sherman’s in Atlanta beginning his campaign
Cutting off the rebels by tearin’ up the trains
Uncle Tom's Cabin was written well
The horrors of slavery it did tell
Gotta keep on movin’ – lighting up the torch
Practicin’ a policy he called it “scorched earth”
What about State's Rights I've heard?
It all has to do with some words
Heading to Savannah in 1864
Captured in December– a Christmas gift for sure
Southern states wouldn't be told what to do
But others felt the Constitution was glue
By 1865 things were coming to an end
Lee did surrender to a once promising friend
When the election of 1860 was done
States began seceding, war was begun
In a village called a Courthouse named Appomattox
They came to some terms they thought would fix
(Chorus)x2
(Chorus)
Part II – The Events
1861 Ft. Sumter starts the war
The Union lost the Battle, but there were plenty more
Jefferson Davis led the Confederacy
Consisting of states 2 + 3x3
Emancipation Proclamation in 1862
Freed all the slaves. Is that really true?
By 1863 Lincoln’s in a mess
During the war he gave the Gettysburg Address
Bloody turning point of the war
Further north for Bob E. Lee no more
No Confederate jailed or charged with treason
Officers kept their guns and horses for a reason
Lee & Grant were thinkin’ of reconcilin’
When Lincoln got the news, bet he was smilin’
600 thousand Americans dead in the end
More than any war we’ve had since then
You heard right. I’ll say it once more
Civil War killed more than the following four:
Korea, Vietnam, and World War times 2
A massive negative impact this much is true.
(Chorus)x2
(Chorus)
