Main God/Godess: Brahma Number of followers: 750 million Aum/Om The Aum/Om is the main Hindu sacred symbol. It is said to be heard in the deepest of medetation and is said to be the most suitable name for God. It is offen the symbol used at the start of every passage in the Hindu sacred text, the Vedas. Mandir The Mandir is the Hindu place of worship. Inside a Mandir, there are lots of Murtis, which can be either a statue or a ceremonial portrait of a God/Godess. Murtis are said to answer the prayers of the faithful. They also offer food and clothing to the Murtis Vedas The Vedas is the Hindu sacred book. There are 4 Vedas, the Rig Veda, the Sama Veda, the Yaju Veda and the Atharva Veda. The Vedas contain hymns, incantations and rituals from ancient India. Karma Hindus believe that what goes arround comes arround. This means that if I do something bold, something bad will happen to me or if I do something good, something good will happen to me. This process is called Karma. Bad Thing Bad Karma Good Thing Good Karma Diwali Diwali is one of the main Hindu festivals and known as the festival of lights. Divali is a 5 day celebration that is to celebrate when good won over evil. During Diwali, people light lamps, in hope that the Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of good luck and wealth) will bring them luck for the coming year. Reincarnation Hindus believe that when you die, you come back as something else, such as a person, an animal or a plant. In every life they try to be better and better. Their overall goal is to achieve Moksha. Moksha is the realisation of the truth. Once they achieve Moksha, they become one with Brahma. Birth Death Life Brahma Brahma is the main Hindu God. Hindus believe that Brahma is the creator of the universe. They also believe that all the other Gods and Goddesses are just avatars of Brahma. Vishnu The Hindu God Vishnu is the preserver and protecter of creation. Vishnu has a blue body and 4 arms. He is said to have ten forms and he is one of the most important gods in the Hindu religion. Shiva The Hindu God Shiva is the destroyer. The River Ganges (a sacred place for Hindu people) is said to have come out of the head of Shiva. People started swimming in the holy water of the Ganges if they were sick to try to heal themselves. Shiva is now said to live on the top of the Mount Kailas Medatating The Hindu Trilogy The Hindu Trilogy consists of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. What happens is Brahma creates the world, Vishnu preserves the world and Shiva destroys it. This is how Hindus think everything is created and destroyed. Creation Preservation Destruction Lakshmi Lakshmi is the Hindu Goddess of wealth, fortune, prosperity, love and beauty. She is said to have four arms with a red saree. She is said to come into people’s houses and grant them good luck on Diwali. Ganesha Ganesha is the most widely worshiped Hindu God. He has an elephant’s head and a man’s body but with four arms. He is considered to be the Lord that removes obsticals. Shaktis Shaktis is the Goddess of music, knowledge and the arts. She is also the wife of Brahma.
