Fitness Vocabulary Terms
1. aerobic exercise: rhythmic, nonstop, moderate to vigorous activity that requires large
amounts of oxygen
2. anaerobic exercise: exercise of short duration that requires more oxygen than can be inhaled.
3. body composition: the ratio of body fat to lean body tissue, such as bone, muscle, and fluid
4. calorie: amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree
Celsius, the energy producing value in food
5. cardiovascular endurance: The ability to exercise the entire body for long periods of time. It
requires a strong heart, healthy lungs and
clear blood vessels to supply the body with oxygen. Examples include jogging, walking, running,
swimming and biking.
6. cool-down: a period of low to moderate exercise to prepare your body to end a workout
session
7. cross-training: switching between different activities and exercises on different days
8. dehydration: a condition in which fluid loss exceeds fluid intake and disrupts the body's
normal electrolyte balance
9. FITT principle: a method for safely increasing aspects of your workout without injuring

10. flexibility: the ability of your body's joints to move easily through a full range of motion
11. heat exhaustion: an overheating of the body that can result from dehydration
12. heredity: the passing of traits from parents to offspring

14. muscle endurance: a measure of a muscle's ability to repeatedly exert a force over a
prolonged period of time
15. muscle strength: The ability of a muscle or group of muscles to produce a maximal force
during a single contraction.
16. oxygen debt: a temporary lack of oxygen availability due to exertion
17. physical activity: any form of movement that causes your body to use energy
18. physical fitness: the ability to handle the physical demands of everyday life without
becoming overly tired.

20. resting heart rate: the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are relaxing.
