3 Types of Plant Cells
1.
Parenchymal Cells
Structure
-thin cell wall
-large central vacuole (contains stored food)
-has lots of plastids (chloroplasts)
Function
-photosynthesis when light is present
-food storage
Example:
-apples
-most common and least specialized type of plant cell
2.
Collenchyma Cells
Structure
-thick, stretchable cell walls
-living cells
Function
-support the plant
-found in areas that are growing rapidly
Example:
-strings in a celery stalk
3.
Sclerebchymal Cells
Structure
-thick, non-stretchable cell walls
-usually dead at maturity
Function:
-support the non-growing parts of a plant
Example:
Outer covering of seeds and nuts
-stem and leaf veins
