The Nile River
The world’s longest river,
in Egypt
Why is it called “the Gift of Egypt” by the Greek historian Herodotus?
It gave life to the dead, turned sand into luscious green valley and enabled a great
civilization to flourish
It stretches from Central Africa to Northern Africa (flows North, into the Mediterranean
Sea)
How did the Nile benefit and influence Egyptian life?
1. It provided a Green Fertile (rich) Strip of land that cut through the desert
It provided a large region of fertile land North in the Delta. (fan-shaped area)
In the South, it provided rich soil to Egyptian fields near the Nile as it flooded every summer.
2. Provided jobs for most of the Egyptians who worked and lived near the Nile.
It gave protection because of the Cataracts. (shallow lengths or white water rapids of the
Nile River, where the surface of the water is broken by many small rocks and stones sticking
out of the river bed)

How did the Egyptians control and use the Nile River?
1. Irrigation Canals were dug to bring water from the Nile
2. Basins were dug to store water for dry season
3. Shadoof took water out of the basin


