STRIKING A BALANCE BETWEEN THE
MATHEMATICAL CONTENT AND
PRACTICE STANDARDS
MENA Common Core Conference
Session 2
ICE BREAKER
 Integer Wars
 In groups of 2, take 5 cards each from the pack.
 Number cards are valued as stated. Aces are 1, picture cards are 10. No Jokers.
 At the same time, turn your top card over, add the values of the cards together.
 First player to correctly state sum wins cards.
 End game when one player has all cards.
 Variations
 Black cards are positive numbers, red cards are negative numbers.
 Try multiplying or subtracting using the original game rules or the colour
variation.
 Try adding more people to the game.
SESSION OUTLINE (D.O.K LENS)
Recall the Math Practice Standards (MPS)
Summarise and Interpret the MPS
Develop a Logical Argument and Cite Evidence of
the MPS
Triangle Task
Parachute Task
Apply learning and Create MPS tasks
RECALL THE MATH PRACTICE
STANDARDS (MPS)
MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP6 Attend to precision.
MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique
the reasoning of others.
MP7 Look for and make use of structure.
MP4 Model with mathematics.
MP8 Look for and express regularity in
repeated reasoning.
SUMMARISE AND INTERPRET THE MPS
TPS:
Select a MPS and rewrite it in your own words, 2
sentences or less.
Give an example of its use.
Resource:
Your device and the CCSS website
OR hard copies in room

DEVELOP A LOGICAL ARGUMENT AND
CITE EVIDENCE OF THE MPS
Triangle Task:
Two vertices of a triangle are located at (0,4)
and (0,10). The area of the triangle is 12 square
units. Where can the third vertex be located?
