Transcript
The Peloponnesian war happened between the Athens and the Spartans.
It is believed that the war was launched because the Spartans were afraid of the
Athenians. Also known as the Athenian Empire during that time, the Empire
drove the Persians out of their land and their power was very strong. The
Athens made a wall for defense against the Spartans while they were conquering
the Persian land. Later, the Athens sided with Megara. War broke out between
the Athenian Empire and the Spartans. The Athenians lost, and the Athenians
had to sign a thirty-year treaty with the Spartans. This is ‘The First
Peloponnesian War’.
The treaty was broken when Samos, the ally of Athens formed a rebellion.
The Spartans decided not to interfere for they were afraid there would be a war.
The Athens soon formed an alliance with Corcyra and other powerful city-states.
However, Corcyra was not friendly with Corinth. The trading of goods were
endangered because of this alliance. Corinth, Megara, and Aegean urged Sparta
to start a war.
