The physiological response to stress requires coordinated behavioral and visceral
responses. The latter rely on the release of corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) from
the terminals of neurons located in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the
hypothalamus. The long-term effects of stress on the brain and subsequent impact on
behavior have been explored extensively. More recently, we have started to address
how synaptic inputs control the activity of PVN neurons and how stressful
experiences can alter these synapses. These new findings reveal unique forms of
synaptic plasticity in which the rules of information storage are tightly linked to the
physiological state of the organism.
