Geography 12 Assignments
There are 9 assignments that students are required to complete during this course. The
maximum course credit for these assignments is 40%.
Unit 1: Introduction
Assignment 1: Geography - A Student Portfolio: 100 Marks –
Due date: June 3
As an on-going assignment throughout the course, all students are required to collect
information from newspapers, magazines, television, radio and the Internet. Clippings,
pictures, notes, sketches, photographs, charts and diagrams which are related to
Geography must be collected and organised into a student portfolio. Each portfolio entry
should be classified under a major topic or theme and should include the source and date
of the material, a brief student-written description of the information and its relevance to
the course. The following major topics should be covered in the portfolio:




The Nature of Geography
Each of the Five Themes of Geography
Current Issues involving Geography
Geography and Careers
Assignment 2: Group Presentation: Interactions: 50 Marks
This is a group assignment. Working in a group of 2 or 3, collect a set of images that
illustrates the impacts of specific human activities on natural environments. Examples
should be chosen which show both local and global scale impacts. Additionally, collect a
set of images that shows the influence and impact of the natural environment on human
activities. Make a group oral presentation using correct and appropriate terminology
accompanied by a PowerPoint display of the photographs, captions, notes, maps and
other information needed to present the information.

Unit 2.1.1: The Atmosphere and Weather
Assignment 3: Booklet of Annotated Diagrams: 50 Marks
All students must prepare and organize a student-made booklet of annotated diagrams
that deal with the structure, composition and large-scale movement of the atmosphere,
weather phenomena and processes. The diagrams should be computer generated but yu
may draw on white, unlined paper. Each one should have a border, an appropriate title
and be labeled with descriptive and explanatory notes. The booklet should have a suitably
titled cover page and include a table of contents. Partial list of diagrams to include:
Climograph
North American Air Masses
Cloud Types
Orographic Rainfall
Convectional Rainfall
Cyclonic or Frontal Rainfall
Cross-Sectional view of a Hurricane
Cross-Sectional view of a Tornado

Unit 2.1.2: The Atmosphere and Climate
Assignment 4: Wall Display of Climate Regions: 50 marks
Working either singly or with one partner, each student must prepare a bulletin board
display (or its computerized equivalent) which deals with the world's major climate regions. It
should also deal with the inter-relationships between climate, vegetation and soil. It
should also provide examples of the interactions between climate and human activity.
The display should include maps, climographs, pictures, written descriptions, and written
explanations.
Due date: March 29
Assignment 5: Research Paper - Climate Change and People: 100 marks
Each student must write a research paper dealing with how humans influence and are
influenced by climatic change. Topics such as global warming, acid rain, ozone layer
depletion, desertification, as well as naturally occurring climate change could be
explored. The paper should address the question from regional, local or global
perspectives.

Unit 2.2: Tectonic Processes
Assignment 6: Choice of Option 1 or Option 2
If you choose Option 1 for this assignment you must choose Option 2 for Assignment 7
below. If you choose Option 2 for this assignment you must choose Option 1 for
Assignment 7 below.
Option 1: Presentation - Tectonic Activity and People: 50 marks
Students, either singly or with one partner, must prepare either a written, or visual, or
oral, or combination presentation dealing with the impact of tectonic activity on people.
This could be either a global or regional overview or an actual case study.
Option 2: Booklet of Annotated Diagrams: 50 marks
Each student must prepare a collection of annotated diagrams that deal with tectonic
landforms and the processes that produce them. The booklet should be similar to that
described in Assignment 3 above.

Unit 2.3: Gradational Processes
Assignment 7: Choice of Option 1 or Option 2
If you choose Option 1 for this assignment you must choose Option 2 for Assignment 6
above. If you choose Option 2 for this assignment you must choose Option 1 for
Assignment 6 above.
Option 1: Presentation - Gradation and People: 50 marks
Students, either singly or with one partner, must prepare either a written, or visual, or
oral, or combination presentation dealing with the impact of either mass wasting, rivers
or glaciation on people. This could be either a global or regional overview or an actual
case study.
Option 2: Booklet of Annotated Diagrams: 50 marks
Each student must prepare a collection of annotated diagrams that deal with gradational
landforms and the processes that produce them. The booklet should be similar to that
described in Assignment 3 above.

Unit 3.1: Management of Resources
Assignment 9: Group Presentation: 50 marks
Working in groups of either three or four, students choose their own resourcemanagement issue and present their findings and opinions on: causes, effects, solutions,
local-regional-global location and relevance.

Unit 3.2: Resources and Sustainability
Assignment 10: Thesis Development: 50 marks
Working either singly or with one partner, students must develop and defend a thesis
relating to the sustainability of a particular resource. The thesis should be written and
presented to the class. It should:



clearly define the issue in geographic terms;
accurately apply relevant geographic concepts;
refer to specific, accurate and relevant data;

identify and asses strengths and weaknesses of various points of view;
decide on the most appropriate course of action.
