Table of Content: 0 Who is the interviewee? 0 What is his disease? 0 How did he get that disease? 0 What are the symptoms of that disease? 0 What will be your advice to him? 0 How can we prevent that kind of disease? PROFILE: 0 Name: Alberto Maristela Castalone 0 Age: 72 years old 0 Birthday: July 21, 1944 0 Relationship: Grandfather 0 Diseases: Emphysema and Parkinson’s Disease 0 Kind of Biomolecules that affect from the disease: Protein 0 My grandfather has a disease called Emphysema. He get this kind of disease because when he was younger because he always smoke in every places or in short he is a chainsmoker. His doctor advice him to stop smoking because it is bad for his health especially to his lungs but he continue doing it but he stop when he get his disease that came from the tobacco and in smoking. The doctor advice him to stop smoking, avoid polluted area and do exercise regularly. Because his disease is a lifetime disease he drink a medicine that could help to stop the emphysema to increased and to spread to his body, but sometimes it is hard for him to breath especially when he is exposed to smoke and it is hard for him to sleep at night and he also get another disease that called as a Parkinson’s Disease. WHAT IS EMPHYSEMA? EMPHYSEMA 0 It is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to overinflation of the alveoli. 0 It is included in a group of diseases called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. 0 It is called an obstructive lung disease because airflow on exhalation is slowed or stopped because overinflated alveoli do not exchange gases when a person breaths due to little or no movement of gases out of the alveoli. 0 Emphysema changed the anatomy of the lung in several important ways. 0 This is due to in part to the destruction of lung tissue around smaller airways. 0 COPD as a group of diseases is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. 0 Unlike heart disease and other more common causes of death, the death rate for COPD appears to be rising. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF EMPHYSEMA? 0 Cigarette Smoking – is by far the most dangerous behavior that causes people to develop emphysema, and it is also the most preventable cause. 0 Cigarette smoke contributes to this disease process in two ways. It destroy lung tissue which results in the obstruction of air flow, and it causes inflammation and irritation of airways that can add to air flow obstruction. 0 Air pollution acts in a similar manner to cigarette smoke. 0 Abnormal airway reactivity, such as bronchial asthma, has been shown to be a risk factor for the development of emphysema. 0 Older age is a risk factor of emphysema. 0 Men are more likely to develop emphysema than women. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF EMPHYSEMA? 0 Shortness of breath is the most common symptom of emphysema. Cough, sometimes caused by the production of mucus, and wheezing may also be symptoms of emphysema. 0 Emphysema usually develops slowly. You may not have any acute episodes of shortness of breath. 0 People with emphysema may develop a “barrel chest” where the distance from the chest to the back, which is normally less than the distance side to side, becomes more pronounced. 0 This is a direct result of air becoming trapped behind obstructed airways. ADVICE FOR THE PATIENT 0 You should follow the advice of your doctor. 0 Don’t eat food that is not allowed for you 0 Eat vegetables and fruits because it is good for your health. 0 Eat food that is rich in protein so that it could help to prevent increasing of your disease. HOW TO PREVENT THE DISEASE? 0 Steroid medications – they decrease inflammation in the body. They are used for this effect in the lung and elsewhere and have been shown to be of some benefit in emphysema. 0 Steroids may either be given orally or inhaled through an MDI or another form of inhaler. 0 Antibiotics – these medication are often prescribed for people with emphysema who have increased shortness of breath. 0 Oxygen – if you have shortness of breath and go to a hospital’s emergency department , you often are given oxygen. 0 Stop smoking – although not strictly a treatment, most doctors make this recommendation for people with emphysema. 0 A doctor may be able to prescribe medications to help breaking the addiction and can also recommend behavioral therapies, such as support groups. 0 Bronchodilating medication – these medications, which cause the air passages to open more fully and allow better air exchange, are usually the first medications that a doctor will prescribe for emphysema THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!!!
