AP World History Summer Reading Assignment
Empires in World History: Power and the Politics of Difference
by Jane Burbank and Frederick Cooper
The following is the reading and outline assignment for AP World History. This
assignment is in correspondence with the major emphasis in the AP World History
curriculum of Compare and Contrast (C & C) and Change and Continuity Over Time
(CCOT). This outline contains the chapters for each assignment, the topic of the
assignment and example formats of each.
This assignment is to be HANDWRITTEN over the summer and turned in on the
SECOND day of class for the school year. Assignments that are typed or late will NOT
be accepted. It will be worth 70 points and will be counted as an exam grade.
DIRECTIONS
Directions for each chapter can be found beneath. All of the information will be found in
the corresponding text chapters and should be outlined similarly to the examples that
have been attached. Each subject covered will be worth 10 points, for a total of 70 points
for the entire assignment.
Chapter 1
Overview of the “Ideology of Empire”
 Create a bulleted outline of the characteristics of an Empire

Compare and Contrast the Classical Empires of the Romans and Han Chinese
