SCHOOL: ADDRESS: PHONE #: Sterling Middle School 444 Granite Street 617 – 984 - 8729 SYLLABUS TEACHER Miss Colleen Nichol COURSE/GRADE LEVEL Pre-Algebra, Grade 8 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS Big Ideas Math Textbook Big Ideas Record and Practice Journal Major Topics: The Number System Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers. Expressions and Equations Work with radicals and integer exponents. Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. Functions Define, evaluate, and compare functions. Use functions to model relationships between quantities. Geometry Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS Students should expect homework on a near daily basis covering recently learned material as well as reviewing previous lessons/units. Homework assignments will consist of materials given out in class. Students should expect 30 minutes of homework per night and it should be completed for class the following day. GRADING POLICY Tests: 40% Quizzes: 20% Homework: 15% Class Participation: 10% 3-ring binder: 10% High Five: 5% MAKEUP PROCEDURE Homework: If absent, a student should see the teacher the following day to receive the assignment. If assignment is not made up, it will result in a zero. Quizzes/Tests: If a student scores less than a 70% on a quiz or a test, he/she must get a parent/guardian signature. In addition, the student may also correct mistakes from the test on a separate paper to earn half of the missed points back for an improved grade. GENERAL INFORMATION Extra help is available mornings and afternoons by appointment. Textbooks may be signed out by students if they need it for use at home. It is strongly recommended that they bring math workbook, agenda book, 3-ring binder, pencil, and a TI30XIIS calculator to class. *Adjustments may be made in this syllabus to meet student needs.
