DEPARTMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES
The Department of Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital is one of the largest and most comprehensive
infectious diseases clinical services in the country. It is also an academic Department within the Faculty of
Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Central Clinical School, Monash University and is a premier centre for
clinical and biomedical research and education.
The Department offers expertise in general infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, hospital-acquired infections and
antimicrobial resistance, infection prevention, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, and infections in
immunocompromised hosts. We have six active clinical units at any one time with a dedicated general infectious
diseases inpatient unit, an HIV inpatient unit, a general consultative service, an immunocompromised host
consultative service, and an antimicrobial stewardship and ICU-Burns service.
One of the premier services provided by the Department is the Victorian State-wide HIV Service which provides a
comprehensive program for individuals and populations affected by or infected with HIV in Victoria. This ranges
from acute care and chronic illness management, to health maintenance, prevention and health promotion.
Complications of HIV and antiretroviral therapy, in addition to the myriad of co-morbidities such as cancer,
metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, renal impairment, viral hepatitis and liver disease, drug and alcohol
related disorders, neurocognitive impairment and psychiatric illness are all managed in a multidisciplinary
ambulatory care clinic.

seamless transition between clinical care, research and education. In collaboration with other Monash Partners,
we have recently been named as one of four Academic Health Science Centres by the Australian National Health
and Medical Research Council.

improvement and infectious diseases education and training.
IMMUNOCOMPROMISED HOST CONSULTATIVE SERVICE
The immunocompromised host consultative service, is a leading national service which provides a comprehensive
program for individuals and populations affected by infection as a result of iatrogenic suppression of the immune
system. This ranges from the management of complex infections and their complications to prevention and health
promotion.
CLINICAL RESEARCH IN Transplant Infectious Diseases
The Clinical Research Unit of the Department is one of the largest of its kind in Australia and conducts research in
the field of transplant-related infections, HIV and other infections. The Department of Infectious Diseases and the
Clinical Research Unit has led clinical research examining the epidemiology, treatment and prevention of
bacterial, viral and fungal infections in transplant patients. One of our main focuses is in optimizing
cytomegalovirus and Aspergillus preventative strategies.
To build on these successes, the fellow will work with researchers at the Alfred to develop world‐leading
Transplant Infectious Diseases research and training and strengthen partnerships between researchers, and
clinicians primarily within The Alfred but also in Victoria, nationally and internationally.
POSITION SUMMARY & LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The Clinical Research Fellow will work primarily on the epidemiology of cytomegalovirus infection in allogeneic
stem cell transplantation patients. This work will be under the guidance of clinical researchers within the
Department. Applicants who do not currently hold a PhD would be able to enrol and the projects conducted in this
position can wholly or partially contributing towards completion of a PhD. The incumbent will work as part of a
multidisciplinary research and clinical team including clinical and basic science researchers, research coordinators and clinical staff in the ward and outpatient setting.

Scope of practice is the extent of an individual health professional’s clinical practice within the organization,
based on your credentials, competence, performance and professional suitability and the needs and capability of

SUPERVISION
Alfred Health Approach
All fellows at Alfred Health work under supervision. Supervision can be either direct or indirect and will always be
provided by a more senior doctor. The nature of the supervision provided will depend on the complexity of the
care being delivered and the experience of the fellow.
The Alfred Health approach should not be confused with the Medical Board of Australia supervision guidelines for
limited registration, which apply to the registration requirements of international medical graduates (Supervised
Practice for Limited Registration, May 2012 www.medicalboard.gov.au ).

Undertake activities and responsibilities as a physician/advanced trainee and investigator for
cytomegalovirus focussed research in the Clinical Research Unit including, in particular, medical record
review and data collection

Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at relevant
conferences and seminars

Contribute to statistical analysis of research results and the writing of articles for peer-reviewed
publication

Continually update and extend personal medical knowledge and skills, regularly attend clinical and
educational meetings and remain familiar with current medical literature

As a representative of the Hospital and the Medical Profession, present an appearance and demeanour
of professionalism at all times;

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
ESSENTIAL

Infectious Diseases Physician/Advanced Trainee with experience in the care of immunocompromised
patients with infections

Demonstrated experience in clinical care of immunocompromised patients with infections

Demonstrated experience in performing clinical research

Ability to work as a part of a research team in a self-directed manner

Strong organisational skills and initiative in problem solving

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to present study findings through
manuscript submissions, conference presentations and other departmental meetings

Ability to solve problems by using discretion, innovation and professional expertise;

AHPRA general medical registration without conditions, notations, undertakings or reprimands A (unless
international graduate registered with APHRA under supervision)
DESIRABLE

Experience in clinical or laboratory based studies in the field of infections in the immunocompromised
patients

Higher research degree (PhD, MD or BMedSci) with a focus on infections in the immunocompromised
clinical research or a related field
