Quality Data Management, Inc. ® QD3 Java Web Start Environment Set-up Manual Introduction This software uses remote deployment to provide automatic updates. The deployment mechanism that is used is Java Web Start (JWS), which requires that the client computer has: 1. Access to the internet. 2. Ability to access the web via port 80 3. Ability to download and run Java programs. During this installation process, you will: 1. Download the Java JRE (Java Run-time Engine) version 1.4.2. 2. Install it. 3. Verify that it installed the Java Web Start application along with it. 4. Test that you can access the new software. Procedure Step Action 1 Save your work and close any open applications on your computer. Quality Data Management, Inc. 2004 2 Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and click on Download J2SE JRE 3 At the next screen, choose accept (after reading the agreement) and press the Continue button: Quality Data Management, Inc. 2004 4 Choose the proper version for your computer. The offline version will download the entire program and install from there. Please click on the first option – Windows Offline. 5 When asked, save the file to a place where you will be able to find it again, such as the Desktop. Click save and select the Desktop. 6 7 The file will take a few minutes to down load. When the file is done downloading, close all applications, including the Internet Explorer browser. Double click on the Java JRE icon that you just saved. It may take a few minutes for something to happen. 8 Quality Data Management, Inc. 2004 9 Follow the directions to install it, selecting all defaults. Click to Accept the License Agreement, after you have read it 10 Select Typical Installation and click on the Next button Quality Data Management, Inc. 2004 NOTE: If you are asked what application to use to open the .jnlp file, please select javaws.exe. If you choose Internet Explorer, then the QD3 application will not work and you will have to change the setting after the installation. To change the setting, go to Start->Control Panel->File Types and select javaws.exe for .jnlp files. 11 When the installation is finished, verify that the “Java Web Start” program has been installed by locating the icon on your desk top. 12 13 14 When the installation is finished, restart your computer When the computer comes back up, open a new Internet Explorer Browser. Open the page (It is case sensitive): http://www.qdmnet.com/qd3/QDStart.jnlp Quality Data Management, Inc. 2004 15 You should see the following window appear. This windows indicates that QDM is transmitting a Signed Java Jar file. Select Start. 16 The application should start up and you should see the logon screen: 17 If you don’t see the logon screen, please note any errors that you see and contact QDM Customer Support at 1-877-QDM-SUPPort (877-736-7877). Quality Data Management, Inc. 2004 Trouble-Shooting Problem 1: Clicking on the web address does not open up the QD application. Probable Issue 1. Verify that you are using the proper address. Solution Enter the proper url in Internet Explorer Address window. http://www.qdmnet.com/qd3/QDStart.jnlp 2. Verify that you have properly installed Java Runtime Engine (JRE) and JWS (Java Web Start) A. Look for your Java installation. It should be a version 1.4.1 or greater. B. You should see the Java Web Start icon on your desktop. It is the Java Coffee Cup icon with the name "Java Web Start". If these seem right, but you are still getting errors, 3. jnlp files have been associated with Internet Explorer rather than Java Web Start 1. Uninstall Java 2. Download it again as directed in this guide 3. Re-Install it. For Window XP, go to 1. Control Panel->Folder Options 2. File Types tab 3. Scroll down to jnlp 4. Click on it to high light it 5.
