The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival™ XLV sponsored in part by Stephen and Christine Schwarzman The Kennedy Center Corporate Fund U.S. Department of Education The National Committee for the Performing Arts Dr. Gerald and Paula McNichols Foundation This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in collegelevel theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturges, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels. Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for inclusion at the KCACTF regional festival and can also be considered for invitation to the KCACTF national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC in the spring of 2010. Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation. Director’s Note THE SNOW QUEEN is a new project of Red Thread Arts, a collaboration of playwright Barbara Wiechmann and director Jeff Mousseau, working with composer Lisa Dove and scenic designer Sarah Edkins. Initiated in 2010, Red Thread makes visuallyarresting, language-driven performances that explore alternative and compelling new ways of imagining fairy tales, myths and new stories for the theatre. Supported and first presented as a rehearsed reading at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of New Visions New Voices 2012, sections of THE SNOW QUEEN were subsequently produced as a staged workshop during Culturemart 2013 at HERE, New York City. Additional funding for the development process has been provided by the Foundation for Contemporary Art and the Huisking Foundation. On behalf of my Red Thread collaborators, it's a pleasure to bring THE SNOW QUEEN to life at Siena College. Two plus years in the making, THE SNOW QUEEN is receiving its first production in Foy Hall's Beaudoin Theatre...and we couldn't be happier. The support, enthusiasm and talent that we have found provided exactly the right environment in which we could complete our writing and composing. It's been a privilege to work closely with the Department of Creative Arts, Siena's students and faculty; the work done here will, no doubt, have an indelible impact on the project's continued evolution. The creation of any new work requires time for ideas to incubate and reveal themselves. It also necessitates that one accept failure as a potential outcome. To have an opportunity to fail--an irony considering that grades are a huge focus for many of you reading this--is indeed a luxury. Siena's Creative Arts Department gamely invited us complete THE SNOW QUEEN here. I hope that all those involved have benefited by the experience as much as we have. We are indebted to you for your willingness to fail, and by that I really mean, your gumption to create. Special thanks to Thomas Coohill & Patricia Trutty-Coohill and Brian & Denise Massman for generously hosting the NYC-based artists during rehearsals and tech week. CREATIVE ARTS The Creative Arts Department engages students with works of the creative imagination in the visual arts, theater, music, and broadcasting, and prepares them for future personal, academic and professional work in the arts. Students gain invaluable skills that they can apply to other courses, their careers and their lives. Chair ..……………………………….
