OBJECTIVE: Students

classifying parts of
an established
civilization
5 Characteristics
 Why
advanced? The city in Sumer had a
center for trade for the larger area.
People brought goods to the market to
sell
 Specialized
Workers? People skilled in
specific areas such as traders, priests,
government officials, teachers and
artisans

Complex institutions? With a large population a
system for ruling or governing these people for
law and order and worship ceremonies
became necessary.

Sumerians had the temple (ziggurat) as their
center for religion, government and trade

System for educating scribes
 Record
Keeping? Needed to record new
laws, money collection, and calendars
for rituals.
 Scribes
became essential and they
created a form of writing called
cuneiform (wedge shaped). This was one
of the first beginnings of written history

Advanced Technology? New tools were
needed for planting/farming. Ox drawn
ploughs were created

Artisans used a potters wheel to more easily
make pottery for jugs, plates and bowls

Metalworkers eventually turned to bronze
instead of stone for tools, weapons and armor
(Beginning of Bronze Age 3000 B.C.)

the following features of an Advanced
Civilization: Complex Institutions, Advanced
Cities, Specialized Workers, Record Keeping,
Advanced Technology.

