CANADIAN CONTEXT
- Soldiers were recruited and trained
- A large Merchant Marine was
developed
- Huge airforce training program took
place and bases were airports were
built all over
- Factories were up and running making
huge amounts of wartime supplies
- After France surrendered, Canada
became more committed to an all out
effort in the war to help Britain.
-Began badly for Britain
and its allies
-It was questionable
about whether or not
Hitler could be defeated
- In June 1941, Germany turned on
USSR and attacked them; made
USSR an ally of Britain
- Japan attacked Pearl Harbour in
Dec. 1941; brought USA into the war
- The US made huge gains on Japan
in the Pacific
- The Allies pushed Germany out of
Northern Africa
-Germany suffered huge losses in
the Soviet Union (Stalingrad)
-Experience success and failure
- In the Battle of the Atlantic, German
U-Boats sunk many naval and supply
ships heading to Europe
-By 1943, Allied convoys had used antsubmarine tactics to defend better
against the Nazis
-Canada suffered huge losses against
the Japanese in Hong Kong
-Canada suffered huge losses in the
attack on Dieppe, France where the
German’s were better equipped and
trained and well fortified
Balance of the war
shifted to the Allies after
victories in The Pacific,
North Africa and
Stalingrad.
- US captured many Pacific islands
from the Japanese
- Soviets made huge gains against
Germany and pushed them back into
Berlin
-Allies relentlessly bombed German
cities
- Canada’s air force rapidly increased
(especially in bombing missions)
- The bomber command focused on
destroying German industry
- Canada was involved in the Italian
Campaign, which led to the Northward
removal of German troops and
surrender of Italy
Final phase of the war
- All out allied invasion of Europe
was called Operation Overlord; on
the beaches of Normandy, France
(D-Day)
-Germans were stuck between the
allies attacking from the east and
Soviets from the west
-Germany was forced to surrender in
May
-US ended the war in the Pacific in
August with the use of two nuclear
bombs in Japan
- Apart of the D-Day invasion; Canada’s
beach was code named Juno
- It was a successful amphibious
invasion alongside British and US
troops that captured the beaches of
France and forces the Germans back
into Germany against Soviet resistance
