What might a typical day be like? A day in the life of a Senior Business Intelligence Database
Administrator …
The good news is that there isn’t a typical day, but ‘a day in the life of’ could look like this:
8:30 – Catch up with some of the team who are already in (we have flexi time, so start and end times are
varied) and then head to the tea point to make a drink.
8.45 – I begin my day of database administration by checking for alerts, I have monitoring tools and scripts
that will alert me when things are not performing well, so I know when something needs my attention.
9:15 – I carry out a few routine tasks and then I check my emails. A couple of developers have booked
some of my time, to help them fine tune a database workload on their project.
11:15 – One of our QA testers has requested that I take a look at the test database they are having
problems with.
12:00 – Lunch time – I pop out with some colleagues to grab some lunch, we normally bring it back to the
office to eat, unless it’s a sunny day and we sit outside.
13:00 – Another NCFE team has asked me to show them how to use the dashboard I have developed so
they can customise and produce their own reports. I head down to the meeting room where they are
having their team meeting.
14:00 – Got a scheduled 1-2-1 meeting now with the Business Intelligence Developer, it’s important to
have this time to feedback to each of the team about their performance, discuss any potential training
needs, as well having time to catch up with them generally.
14:50 – I’ve been developing more functionality into a Business Intelligence dashboard to enable our
internal customers to pull off reports and data themselves, I’ve scheduled time in my diary this afternoon
to continue with it.
16:00 – I have been working on a new solution around our current database infrastructure. I spend the
remainder of the day documenting the proposal for presentation to the Strategic Management Team.
17:00 – Home time!
