HIV/Aids Education: Human Immunodeficiency Virus Implications for Nurses and Other Healthcare Professionals 8th Edition | Self-Study Online Course | 7.1 Contact Hours Target audience For nurses, advanced practice nurses and other healthcare professionals. Content meets the 7-hour HIV/AIDS education requirement mandated by the state of Washington for licensure of nurses and other healthcare providers. COURSE Description This course is designed to update nurses and other members of the healthcare team about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), HIV infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Course content meets education requirements mandated by Washington State for licensure of nurses and other health care providers. The course consists of lectures, handouts for each lecture, two brief reading assignment in KNOW (an online HIV Prevention Education reference published by the Washington State Department of Health Office of Infectious Disease), an HIV Web Study assignment, a posttest and a course evaluation. A grade of 80% or higher is required on the post-test for successful completion. The test can be retaken as often as needed. Objectives At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be better able to: 1. Explain the epidemiology, transmission and pathogenesis of HIV infection. 2. Describe common clinical manifestations of HIV infection. 3. Describe diagnostic testing and counseling guidelines for HIV infection. 4. Discuss the goals of and treatment recommendations for antiretroviral therapy (ART). 5. Describe strategies for promoting adherence to antiretroviral therapy. 6. Identify approaches to HIV prevention and risk reduction. 7. (Optional) Describe the evidence for and basics of prescribing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) using antiretroviral medication(s). (This lecture provides indepth information on PrEP and PEP. An overview of these topics is provided in lecture 6.) 8. Discuss the role of condom use in HIV prevention. 9. Discuss the psychosocial aspects of living with HIV infection. 10. Discuss the impact of HIV on women including epidemiology, treatment guidelines and reproductive health issues. 11. Describe the End AIDS Washington campaign and its implications for healthcare professionals. 12. Identify common ethical issues related to the care of patients with HIV/AIDS. 13. Access two free online resources for healthcare professionals: KNOW and HIV Web Study.
