Introduction
The following pages contain instructions for setting up AVImark. If you need assistance, please call our technical
support staff at 877-838-9273 (877-VET-WARE).
You may also visit our website http://www.avimark.net/support for information concerning our software and our
latest hardware recommendations.
Supported Operating Systems
For 1 through 10 workstations, you may use Windows Server (2008 and 2012), Windows 7, or Windows 8, 8.1, or
Windows 10 professional or business editions. We recommend the same operating system for all workstations to
avoid any possible compatibility issues. If you are using different operating systems in a peer-to-peer network, use
the most recent operating system as the AVImark server.
Workstation Operating Systems
99 Windows 10 Professional (32/64-bit)
99 Windows 8.1 Professional (32/64-bit)
99 Windows 8 Professional (32/64-bit)
99 Windows 7 Ultimate (32/64-bit)
99 Windows 7 Professional (32/64-bit)
Do NOT Use Home Editions
One of the many reasons we do not recommend Windows Home editions is because this operating system will only
allow a maximum of five connected workstations. Additionally, Windows Home editions lack many security features
required for the business-computing environment.
For 11 or More Workstations
AVImark requires a server computer installed with Windows Server (2008 or 2012) operating system dedicated
to serving AVImark to your workstations. The term “Dedicated” means the server computer will not run AVImark
on a daily basis except on the rare occasion that AVImark may require maintenance. You should update the server
and workstations with the latest service pack available from Microsoft. Your workstation computers should have
installed any of our recommended Windows operating systems.
Server Operating Systems
99 Windows 2012 (Standard, Essentials, Data Center) Edition (32/64-bit)
99 Windows 2008 (Standard, Essentials, Data Center) Edition (32/64-bit)
When setting up a Windows Server, it is VERY important to contact a reputable technician who is willing to follow
our specifications and recommendations discussed later in this guide.

Recommended Word Processors
Please review the following key points before purchasing or installing a word processing application for use
with AVImark.
9 We recommend using Microsoft Word Versions 2010, 2013, or 2016. If you require other Microsoft
Office applications, such as Excel, Outlook, etc, you may install them, too. We only support office suites
that are licensed for “commercial” use. Prior to purchasing or using any office suite or word processing
application, please review its End User License Agreement (EULA). Microsoft provides a web page where
you can search for your product and review its EULA.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/useterms
99 We highly recommend using the same word processing version on all workstations to avoid document
compatibility issues. When installing a word processing application on your computers, we recommend
that you choose the complete installation package including any optional components and let the installer
select the appropriate installation directory. We recommend installing Microsoft Word or Office on at least
one computer on your network for printing documents.
99 If the server computer is dedicated to AVImark, you need not install a word processing program unless you
plan to edit documents on the server.
LibreOffice or OpenOffice is not capable of printing reminders from AVImark. Additionally, AVImark will not work
with spreadsheets designed using LibreOffice. Lastly, frames and forms in documents designed in LibreOffice will
not work correctly in AVImark.
Avoid using the version of Microsoft Word included in the Microsoft Works Suite packages or Office starter. It does
have known issues with AVImark.
A Word about Documents
You must store all AVImark documents on the server computer in the My Documents directory. You may organize your
documents by placing them in separate subdirectories under the My Documents directory. AVImark will automatically
install several hundred related documents in several subdirectories under the My Documents directory. You can
link additional documents to your many diagnoses, treatments, inventory as take-home client education documents.
You will need to store other related documents in the directory locations specified in AVImark in the Work With |
Hospital Setup | System tab.

Printers
We recommend using printers listed on our Hardware Requirements document located at https://www.avimark.
net/practice-solutions/hardware/.
Install a Local Printer
You can insert the disk that came with the printer or go to the manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver
and software. Run the setup for the printer and follow the on-screen instructions. Do not hook up the printer until
the install wizard tells you to.
Install a Shared Printer
1. On the local install of the printer, right-click and go to the Printer properties.
2. Click on the Sharing tab.
3. Check Share this printer.
4. From the workstation you’re going to install the printer on, press the Windows key and the letter R. This
should bring up the Run box.
5. Type \\computer name (example: \\resource1).
6. A screen should appear displaying a printer icon.
7. Place the mouse over the required printer.
8. Right-click and select Connect. You may receive a prompt asking for permission to install a printer driver.
Left-click on the button labeled “Yes.” Windows will install the printer on the local machine.
9. If necessary, you may need to open Devices and Printers (or Windows Printers and Faxes) and set the
printer as default.
10. Open AVImark.
11. Left-click on the Utilities menu and then Printer Setup. In Printer Setup, ensure the correct printer is
selected for each item.
12. Left-click on the Form assignment tab (top left) and set the correct form assignment for the printer.
99 You should choose the correct Form for each printer; otherwise, AVImark may not print correctly
(i.e. HP Laser Jet 1200 requires Letter or Picture; a Dymo label printer may use 30258 Diskette). On
printers that have a power management function, you must disable “Sleep Mode.” If Sleep Mode is
not disabled, you may experience various issues when printing from AVImark. Some printers have
extra software used for monitoring the status of the printer. If you experience problems, please
remove the printer software and try re-installing only the driver for the printer. DO NOT “capture”
printer ports.
99 AVImark does not work properly with Auto printers or redirected printers.

Recommended Anti-Virus Software Settings
We do NOT recommend any type of security suite or security package containing more than just anti-virus. We do not
recommend ANY SPECIFIC anti-virus program as long as the anti-virus you choose has the ability to add exceptions
and does not contain a software firewall.
AVImark is an authorized reseller for AVG CloudCare Business Edition. This product can be purchased through
AVImark Hardware Sales and installed and configured.
Settings for Your Anti-Virus
1. Disable the Smart Scan feature (if applicable).
2. Disable the Office/Word plug‐in (if applicable).

*.or$, *.vm$, *.o2$, and *.v2$.).
4. Exclude the AVImark.exe, AVImarkServer.exe, update.exe and upgrade.exe from any “real-time” scanning.
We would recommend that you visit your anti-virus’ website for information on how to add the AVImark files to the
exclusion list.
You may also take a look at the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article. This article discusses slowness issues
with anti-virus software due to scanning Windows files and what files you may exclude for Windows to get better
performance. This is a suggestion and not something that AVImark requires.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158.

Networking
If you are using AVImark for Windows on more than one computer, have a reputable network technician review these
requirements with you. It is imperative that the chosen network technician follow the specifications required by
AVImark. If you do not correctly follow these specifications, you may experience slowness, errors, or even computer
lockups.
Wired Networking
As a minimum:
99 Use Category 5e or Category 6 network cable and 100/1000 Mbps ethernet network adapters and switches.
We have seen excellent results using both the 3-Com and Intel brand of network interface cards.
99 IPV4 is our only recommended networking protocol for use with AVImark. You must not install the IPX/SPX
networking protocol.
DO NOT use a network hub; they are inefficient and can degrade the performance of our product.
DO NOT MAP DRIVES; AVImark has known issues running through mapped drives.
DO NOT attempt to use AVImark on Novell or Lantastic networks.
DO NOT install AVImark on the workstation computers; ONLY on the server.
Wireless Networking
AVImark now supports running its software on a wireless platform. When it comes to using wireless desktops,
laptops, or tablets, there have been vast improvements in wireless technology making wireless networking a lot
more stable and reliable. Although AVImark now supports a wireless platform, there are a few requirements for this
to work:
99 You must run AVImark in Client/Server mode. This allows information to travel faster across the network
and bypasses the traditional Microsoft data exchange. Smaller packets of information are sent over ensuring
that it is moving faster so you don’t notice a slowdown with the laptop or tablet.
99 We recommend a good business-level router. Preferably a dual band wireless AC router. These routers
broadcast a strong signal and have the least amount of interference from office equipment and other
wireless devices running.
99 You will need a wireless N or wireless AC network card in the laptop, tablet, or workstation to ensure
the greatest speed. Wireless AC technology will transmit data at speeds of 600 Mbps or faster and is the
preferred network card if you are using wireless desktops.
99 You will need to check all areas in the clinic that you plan to use the wireless and make sure that you have
a strong signal. The stronger the signal, the faster the performance. You can check this with any wireless
device. In those areas where the signal isn’t as strong, you can get the wireless AC dual band range
extenders and strategically place them in the low signal areas.
99 Any components running wirelessly on the network must meet our hardware requirements for AVImark
whether it is a tablet (Windows based), laptop or desktop.
99 Any wireless routers that are in use for the wireless network must meet our minimum requirements for
speed to run AVImark.
