Description
Ericsson is the largest supplier of mobile networks in the world. These networks are evolving
quickly with a huge demand for new functionality, more Smartphone capacity, and even
higher data rates. The next evolution step in mobile communication beckons – the networked
society where everything that benefits from a connection has a connection, enabling a smarter
society and a more sustainable world. Ericsson is powering the mobile broadband revolution
and Product Development Unit WCDMA and Multi-standard RAN is the provider of
Ericsson's world-leading 3G Radio Access Network.
The Technical Management unit within PDU WCDMA and MS RAN is responsible for
providing leadership in the understanding and development of WCDMA and Multi-standard
mobile network technology. A vital component in this work is quantifying the relationship
between end-user satisfaction, overall network performance, and the use of specific
technology features and settings.
This MSc thesis project involves modelling mobile data traffic using search-based machine
learning algorithms. The work will be performed by two parts: 1) analyzing and manipulating
massive measurement data using statistics and filtering methods; 2) applying machine
learning algorithms on traffic data selection to construct a representative traffic instance
which still maintains the traffic characteristics (statistics) of the original set. Such results will
benefit our work of modelling Packet-Switched mobile data traffic as well as the capacity
dimensioning for our products.
Qualifications
Do you like to co-operate and communicate in a multicultural environment?
We are looking for bright MSc students with an interest in mobile broadband technology and
data analysis. In particular, we prefer the applicants who have knowledge and experience on
the search based machine learning algorithms (such as the genetic algorithm). The suitable
background for the applicants should be Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or other
similar engineering subjects. Advanced courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning,
radio communication, wireless networks, and computer simulation are advantages.
Knowledge about MS Excel, database and Java is required. The experience about scripting
languages, such as Perl, Python and Matlab is also preferred.
In addition you need to have fulfilled course requirements and be self-motivated, flexible and
well organized. Good spoken and written English is essential.
