Ancient Mesopotamia 1. Mesopotamia Map Mesopotamia Mesopotamia <<mehs uh puh TAY mee uh>> was the ancient region where the world's earliest cities were built. Mesopotamia included the area that is now eastern Syria, southeastern Turkey, and most of Iraq. The main part of the area was the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The name Mesopotamia comes from a Greek word meaning “between rivers.” Around 5,500 years ago, a group of people arrived in this region. The area in which they lived became known as Sumer, and the people were called Sumerians. The Sumerians invented the world's first system of writing. They also built the first cities. "Mesopotamia."
