Saint Thomas Aquinas and Humanism
● Thomas Aquinas was a Catholic philosopher living
in the 1200s
● He stressed that faith is important, but humans
could also gain knowledge from logic and reason.
● His views sparked humanism in Europe
● The Catholic church disagreed, stating that
humans should only observe the world through
faith
● Renaissance thinkers used Aquinas’ ideas to look
back at the teachings of Aristotle, Plato, and
Socrates and study the Reason and Logic of the
Greek and Romans.
Humanism
During the Renaissance, Europeans returned to Greek and Roman ideas.
One Idea was Humanism.
Humanists saw the individual and society as important.
The human brain is a gift so we should use it to gain knowledge through
reason, not religious faith.
