Romeo and Juliet
Shakespearean Snapchat
There are several different scenes in the play where a message is delivered to one character on behalf of
another. Mix-ups with these messages sometimes have a major influence on the plot. For this exercise,
pretend that Romeo and Juliet lived in the age of modern technology. Instead of through letters or
messengers, recreate four of the messages from the play (from the list located on the back of this page) as
Snapchats. Use your knowledge of the characters and their relationships with the recipients in order to craft
the best message. What type of image and text would this character use for this message?
Messages to turn into Snapchats:
(A1S2) Capulet’s Servant (who cannot read) unintentionally invites Romeo and Benvolio to the Capulets’ party.
(A2S2) Romeo tells the Nurse to have Juliet meet him at Friar Laurence’s cell for their wedding.
(A3S2) The Nurse tells Juliet of her cousin Tybalt’s death, and Romeo’s banishment.
(A3S3) Friar Laurence tells Romeo of his banishment.
(A3S3) The Nurse tells Romeo of Juliet’s sadness at the news of his banishment.
(A3S5) Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she is to wed Paris on Thursday.
(A4S1) Friar Laurence sends a message to Romeo telling him of the plan he and Juliet have devised (though this is never delivered).
(A5S1) Balthasar tells Romeo of Juliet’s supposed death and that she has been placed in the Capulets’ tomb.
