Statistics used to measure development
are called indicators of development.
Development indicators are divided into:
• Economic, Social, Composite and
Environmental indicators
To determine if:
• people’s quality of life is improving.
• people’s standard of living is improving.
• natural and human resource potential is being
met.
Different types of indicators:
Meaning of terms:
1. Economic indicators measure the:
- Gross Domestic Product (GDP), GDP
per Capita, GDP contributions to
economic sectors, employment levels
GDP - Total value of goods, products and services produced
within the boundaries of country within one year.
2. Social indicators measure:
- poverty, ouality of life, infant
mortality, LE, birth and death rates
3. Environmental indicators measure:
- ecological footprints, carry capacity
of the environment etc.
4. Composite indicators measure:
- a combination of factors such as the
HDI or PQLI
GDP per Capita - is the GDP divided by the number of
people in a country. Shows the average amount of money
available to each person in a country in one year (pa).
LE – refers to the life expectancy which is the average
period that a person may expect to live.
Economic sectors – refers to primary, secondary and tertiary
activities in the economy.
HDI – refers to Human Development index which uses life
expectancy, income and literacy levels. Zero (0) indicates the
worse possible quality of life while 1 shows an almost
perfect place.
