Assignment for the Course ‘Ferroelectric materials and Applications’
Ferro 1:
- Define in your own word a first and second order phase transition
- Draw the Gibbs energy versus the electric field (or vs. the electric displacement)
for each case
- Draw the Polarization dependence on Temperature for each case
- For a ferroelectric material, is it easy to discriminate between 1st and 2nd order transition
in an electric field? Why?
Ferro 2:
- Draw the dependence on the Electric filed of the Polarization in a dielectric
- Draw the dependence on the Electric filed of the Polarization in a ferroelectric
- Define in your own word the Saturation polarization Ps, the remnant polarization Pr,
and the coercive field Ec.
- What is the difference between Ps and Pr? Could they be the same? If yes, in which case?
Ferro 3:
- If the elastic energy in purely harmonic (has a quadratic dependence on P), is
ferroelectricity possible?
- What other condition the harmonic term of the elastic energy should fulfil?
Ferro 4:
- Why is there domain in ferroelectrics?
- What are domain walls? Do they correspond to special planes in the solid?
- Describe in your own work the difference between 90° and 180 ° domain wall
- How can I make the difference between them (let’s assume I have an AFM at diposal)
- Describe in your own work the switching process in terms of ferroelectric domains
Ferro 5:
- Cite at least 3 applications of ferroelectric materials
- According to you, where is it mostly used (and what property of ferroelectrics is used)?
- According to you, where is the future potential of ferroelectrics?
