POSITION SUMMARY
Oversee all art studios, including the sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing and digital photography equipment.
Maintain and update analogue and digital equipment, tools, materials and supplies. Manage studio area budgets,
inventories, and purchases. Supervise, hire and train student workers for art studio and gallery installation work. Teach
ad hoc individual and small groups of students in technical and conceptual aspects of the art curriculum. Direct installation
of professional and student exhibitions in AAH gallery spaces. Maintain and update AAH website.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSBILITIES AND GOALS
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual
assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned.

Work with faculty to determine studio classroom, shop and art material needs for each course. Place orders for all
materials, supplies or equipment needed. Manage studio art budget and consult with Chair and AAH Department
Administrative assistant to work within budget allocations. Be familiar with supply sources, make cost and
convenience evaluations in selection of art materials and vendors. Follow Oxy accounting protocols for credit card
use, purchases and reimbursements.

Establish and execute safety protocols. Instruct and supervise students and faculty in safe and proper use of all studio
equipment. Consult with Senior Risk Manager, Environmental Health and Safety Manager and Campus Safety Officers
to practice OSHA and other safety protocol. Regularly update equipment, methods and supplies to current best
practices. Monitor hazardous waste disposables throughout studio area and supervise safe storage for hazardous and
flammable chemicals. Obtain and maintain first aid and CPR training. Administer basic first aid as necessary.

Supervise the maintenance, inventory and student loan of equipment, tools and supplies. Supervise the maintenance
of the lab facility and work yards. Includes health and safety, cleanliness, organization and security. Coordinate major
cleanups at the end of each quarter. Coordinate with Campus Facilities Division concerning custodial needs as well as
major or minor repairs and remodeling as necessary. Assign locker spaces, work and storage areas to students. Keep
appropriate records of these assignments. Oversee insurance of keys to faculty, staff and student workers.

Hire, Train and Supervise student Lab Assistants. Organize work schedules, and assign tasks to student work study
employees to meet academic course needs. Demonstrate safety protocol, materials and techniques to student
workers and supervise their implementation of these procedures.

Provide conceptual and technical consults to students, informed by expertise in contemporary art practices in relation
to technical expertise. Instruct and supervise most efficient materials and methods for fabricating the art or
installation with a knowledge of their historical and conceptual implications. Provide technical instruction and
supervision in traditional and emerging fabrication systems (wire feed welders) mold making materials (polygel
rubber, hydrogel, alginate, polysilicones, uretharies, etc.), 3-D printing, ink jet printing and other fabrication methods.

Direct the installation/deinstallation of professional exhibitions in the Weingart and Mullin Galleries. Direct and
instruct students to install their own art and contextualize formal and technical choices within larger art historical
context. Supervise the maintenance of Weingart and Mullin Galleries, including lighting and walls, and work with
Facilities when structural or permanent work is involved.

Conduct installation workshop and provide consults to ARTS490 Studio Art Senior Comprehensive class members.

Update AAH website. Maintain archive of student art images, art history papers and other web materials. Seek training
with Oxy web instructors to keep current in Oxy web protocol.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
QUALIFICATIONS




MFA required, with mastery of woodworking, welding essential. Knowledge of printmaking also central.
Must demonstrate experience establishing and maintaining safety protocols for wood, metal, print shops and painting
studios.
Functioning as studio art manager requires knowledge of contemporary art practices, including artists, issues,
movements, and Southern California art galleries and museums.
Experience with art handling, installation procedures, and exhibition preparations.
