Mac OSX Elementary
The Dock
Use the shortcuts found in the dock to open
programs, folders, the trashcan, etc.
Opening and Viewing Folders
1. Double-click the MACINTOSH HD icon
found in the upper, right corner of the
desktop
2. Click DOCUMENTS in the list on the left
side of the FINDER window
3. Use the COLUMN VIEW to easily move
forward and backward into and out of
folders
Working with Windows
CLOSE BUTTON – closes the active window
MINIMIZE BUTTON – minimizes the window as an icon in
the dock
ZOOM BUTTON – Toggles between a larger and smaller
windows size
Tips:
Drag a window’s TITLE BAR at the top to move a window
Hold down the mouse button while dragging the bottom,
right corner of a window to resize the window.
Launchpad and App Store
1. Click the Launchpad icon in the dock.
2. Double-click the App Store icon.
3. Search for and download the
following apps using your Apple ID:
 Skitch
 Sketchbook Express – good for older elementary
 Typist
 Picture Collage Maker Lite

Once an app is downloaded, it can be accessed through the Launchpad icon or the
Applications folder.
**Note: Not all iPad apps that are on the iPads can be downloaded for use on a mac.
4. The dots located just above the dock, show the number of available pages. Swipe left
or right to move between available app pages.
Skitch
Use Skitch to draw pictures or annotate over pictures saved
on your computer.
*Upon launching Skitch, an Evernote screen will appear.
Click DO THIS LATER located in the lower right corner to
launch Skitch without having to go through Evernote.
1. Create an image from the SCREEN SNAP choices:
CAMERA to use the built-in webcam, OPEN A FILE
to locate a picture saved to the computer, or BLANK
for a blank canvas.
2. Select from the following tools to draw or annotate on the image:
3. Drag/drop the Skitch picture to a WORD document, PPT slide, or other application.
Sketchbook Express
Sketchbook Express is a drawing app for the Mac that is similar to MS Paint. Use Sketchbook
Express to draw pictures to represent a cycle or phase in Science or to create a pictorial
representation of a Math statement.

1. Use the Brushes tool to select a brush to begin drawing.
2. Additional tools can be found in the lower left corner of the drawing canvas.
3. Go to FILE- SAVE AS to save drawing.
4. Select .JPG from the FILE FORMAT dropdown.
5. Click SAVE.
Typist
Typist offers a series of lessons and drills covering the basic
keyboard and a number of drills to help increase typing
speed.
1. Select the desired typing activity.
2. Click EXERCISE. An explanation of the activity will
appear on the screen.

3. To exit the typing exercise, click ABANDON
PRACTICE to return to the main menu.
Picture Collage Maker Lite
Free photo collage editor allows the creation of photo collages, scrapbooks, greeting cards
and posters. A user might create a collaborative stamp to represent an Indian tribe or a region
of Texas.
1. Select TEMPLATE and click CHOOSE.
2. Select the SIZE and ORIENTATION and click OK.
3. Click PHOTOS, MASK, FRAME or CLIPART to add to your collage.
a. To add photos, click + to
navigate to the location photos
are saved.
b. Select photos and click OPEN.
c. Photos will appear in the
sidebar. Drag and drop onto
collage canvas.
4. Go to FILE and click SAVE AS.
Collage will save in the Pictures folder.
Firefox Browser
Firefox is one of the browsers installed on the Macbooks.
Setting Up Homepage Tabs
Establish homepage tabs to have one-click access to all of your favorite websites. For
example, you can set the Firefox home button to open your Outlook email, the GCISD
homepage, and Techlessons all at once.
1. Type http://www.gcisd-k12.org/domain/106.
2. Click the + located to the right of the first tab.
3. Type http://gcisdtechlessons.wikispaces.com/.
4. Go to FIREFOX-PREFERENCES-and click on GENERAL.

5. Click USE CURRENT PAGES to set those tabs to open each time Firefox is opened.
*Frequently used websites may include: GCISD Teacher/Staff Resources, GCISD TechLessons,
Schoolwires webpage, GCISD LEAD with Technology Blog
Bookmark a Page
Bookmark websites that you frequently utilize so that they are easily accessible each time you
open the browser.
1. Browse to the website you want to bookmark.
2. Click the BOOKMARKS menu and select BOOKMARK
THIS PAGE to bookmark a single page.
3. Enter a name for the bookmark in the NAME field.
4. Click the FOLDER menu to select the folder where you
want to save the bookmark. Select BOOKMARKS
TOOLBAR to place the shortcut on the toolbar or
BOOKMARKS MENU to place the site on Firefox's Bookmarks menu option. If you
previously created personalized folders, select a folder name from the list shown to
put the bookmark in that folder. Click DONE.
*Frequently used sites may include: A Classroom Wiki, Blog website, ProjectShare website,
Spelling City or a favorite math website.
123 Math Fonts
There are 32 total fonts like counting beans/cubes/tiles/bears, clocks, dice, dominoes,
fractions, geometry, math symbols, money, pattern blocks, and place value. These fonts may
be used in many different programs such as Microsoft WORD and PowerPoint.

There are 2 options for getting the 123 Math Fonts on your Mac. You can either turn in an
Eduphoria work order or install them yourself from the Activities server. Follow the
instructions below to install yourself:
To Connect to the Server:

From the desktop of the laptop, click GO and CONNECT TO SERVER.
Type the server address https://webfs.gcisd.net and click CONNECT.
Enter your network login information.
This will mount a server named WEBFS.GCISD.NET to your desktop.
Installing the Fonts:
1. Open MACINTOSH HD.
2. Click LIBRARY and FONTS. Leave that window open.
3. In a new window, open the WEBFS.GCISD.NET server that you just mounted.
4. Click ACTIVITIES, TEACHER, SOFTWARE INSTALLS,
FONTS and MAC FONTS OSX.
5. Drag all the fonts from the Activity server Mac Fonts OSX window to the Library Fonts
window.
6. Close all windows after all the fonts have copied.
TuxPaint
TuxPaint is a drawing program for primary age students that is similar to KidPix.
Accessing Server Files on a Mac Computer (from School or Home)

From the Finder, click GO and CONNECT TO SERVER.
In the server address, enter https://webfs.gcisd.net.
Click the + sign.
Click CONNECT.
Enter your network login if prompted.
Note: After the first time, the server address will appear in the list at the bottom of the
“Connect to Server” window. Click the address and click CONNECT to login.
Installing TuxPaint
1. From the DESKTOP, double-click
WEBFS.GCISD.NET.
2. Continue to navigate: STAFF > ACTIVITIES,
TEACHER > SOFTWARE INSTALLS >
TUXPAINT > MAC.
3. Double-click the TUXPAINT dmg file.
4. Drag the two TUXPAINT files into the
Applications folder

PhotoBooth
PhotoBooth utilizes the MacBook’s built-in camera so students can take a
photo or video of themselves to use in other projects throughout the year.

Go to APPLICATIONS and click on PHOTOBOOTH.
Click RED CAMERA button to take a picture.
Select photo to save from photo tray.
Go to FILE and click SAVE AS.
Microsoft WORD
Word has many different template styles to use with students for various reports and projects
such as calendars, brochures, flyers, posters, etc.
1. Click your APPLICATIONS folder
found on the dock of your
MacBook.
2. Click on MICROSOFT OFFICE
2011.
3. Click on MICROSOFT WORD.
4. Select either a blank WORD
document or one of the available
templates listed on the left side of
the window.
5. Select your COLOR and FONT.
6. Click CHOOSE.
Quicktime Player Audio Recording
Use Quicktime to create audio recordings of students reading for fluency checks, practicing
speaking in a second language, or for student created podcasts explaining a concept learned
such as Tic-n-Tac Math or the Water Cycle.

Go to APPLICATIONS and click on QUICKTIME PLAYER.
Go to FILE and select NEW AUDIO RECORDING.
Click the record button.
When finished, click the record button again to stop recording.
Press the playback arrow to preview recording.
Go to File and select Export. By default, audio recordings will save to the Movies
folder.
 Audio recordings will save as an M4A.

Using Image Capture
Image Capture can be accessed through the Launchpad or the Applications folder. This
application can be used to download pictures or videos from an iPad camera roll, iPhone,
digital camera or card reader without going through the sync process.
1. From APPLICATIONS, launch ITUNES.
2. Select iTunes > PREFERENCES.
3. Click DEVICES.
4. Place a check mark next to PREVENT IPODS, IPHONES, AND IPADS FROM
SYNCING AUTOMATICALLY.
5. Click OK and QUIT iTunes.
6. From APPLICATIONS, launch IMAGE CAPTURE and
connect a device.
7. Use the IMPORT TO drop-down menu to select the desired
location to save photos/video.
8. If applicable, check the DELETE AFTER IMPORT box on the
lower left side to remove the photos/video from the device.
9. Select photos or video to import using one of the following:
a. Single click the preferred photo.
b. Hold down COMMAND while clicking multiple photos.
c. To select multiple photos in order, click on the top photo and then click the last
photo in the group while holding down SHIFT.
10. Click the IMPORT button.
Note: Do not use the IMPORT ALL button unless all the pictures/videos are to be imported.
11. Select IMAGE CAPTURE > QUIT IMAGE CAPTURE.
Deleting Files
To delete a file, drag the file to the trash or select the file and press COMMAND/DELETE
Saving to a Server

2. Select FILE > SAVE AS
3. Click the downward arrow to expand the SAVE AS window (if applicable)
4. Be sure the column view is turned on and if not, click the
COLUMN VIEW button.
5. Click the SERVER under the SHARED options in the left
column.
6. Navigate to the desired folder.

7. Enter a filename into the SAVE
AS field.
8. Click the SAVE button.
Quitting (Exiting) Programs
Press COMMAND/Q or select QUIT from the application menu
(For example, when in PowerPoint, a PowerPoint menu will appear in the top, left corner of the
screen. When in Word, a Word menu will appear in the top, left corner of the screen.)
Gestures
 Right- Click- Two fingers on the track pad and click.
 Track Pad Scrolling- Two finger drag up or down

Printing
Follow the instructions in the Mac Help folder on your desktop to setup a printer.
Disconnecting from a Server
To disconnect from a server (H: drive, campus share drive, etc.), follow
the steps below:
1. Single-click on the mounted server volume icon
2. Press COMMAND/E
The icon should disappear and disconnect the user from the
preferred server
NOTE: Users will be disconnected from the server volumes when logging off or shutting down

1. From the APPLE menu, select LOG OUT…
2. Click LOG OUT
