OUTPATIENT SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS Outpatient Surgery Please READ THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES. These tips will ensure a more pleasant visit to the Outpatient Department. 1. Patient will arrive in registration. Bring insurance cards. Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) status will be addressed. 2. Patient needs to provide two reliable daytime contact numbers (i.e., change in surgery schedule, general pre-op instructions, arrival time). 3. Patient will be required to provide a current medications list including: dose of medications and frequency; any vitamins or herbals; all known medication, food, or latex allergies. A list of all past surgeries will also need to be provided in case any pre-op antibiotic may be needed. 4. For safety sake, you must have a responsible adult drive you home from the hospital. You may wish to bring a pillow for the trip home. Additional Information For Children Parents may stay with a child in the Outpatient Surgery Unit. Your child may bring a favorite toy or blanket from home. For children under 6 years of age, please arrange to have another adult with you, as it may be unsafe for you to care for your child while you drive home after surgery. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE CHILD CANNOT EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT PRIOR TO HIS/HER SURGERY. If there is any change in your child’s physical condition, such as a cold or fever, contact your physician as soon as possible prior to day of surgery. 5. Laboratory tests, X-rays and other assessments ordered by your physician will be completed prior to your surgery. 6. If there is any change in your physical condition, such as cold or fever, contact your physician as soon as possible prior to day of surgery. 7. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING (INCLUDING GUM, MINTS, OR WATER) AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY. If you are having a local anesthetic, ask your physician for instructions regarding diet restrictions. The Day Of Surgery 8. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be folded for storage. The hospital will provide you with a gown for surgery. Please do not wear makeup, nail polish, or contact lenses. Leave all jewelry and valuables at home. 9. Patient will be taken to assigned room. 10. Height, weight, and vital signs will be taken. 11. All clothing will be removed and gown given. Assistance will be available, if needed. (continued on back) 9/06 12. Physical Assessment with Patient and Family History will be obtained. 13. Dentures may be removed. 14. Any questions will be answered. 15. An IV will be started, which will be used to instill medications during procedure, if applicable. 16. The anesthesia provider will visit you prior to surgery, and pre-op medication may be given, if applicable. 17. Patient will be taken to surgery suite via bed/cart. Time span for procedure will vary. Family is requested to wait in waiting area during surgical procedure. 18. Patient may go to recovery room prior to their return to their room. A staff member, or the physician, will notify family members when you have moved to recovery. 19. Patient will be returned to room. Frequent vital signs are taken upon return to room. Comfort measures will be given. 20. IV will be removed after fully awake and able to eat and drink without nausea and vomiting.
