Wilbarger General Hospital Vernon, Texas Job Description Job Title: Outpatient Surgery RN Department: Surgery Job Summary: To establish guidelines to identify the qualifications and skills required for employment and rendering of optimum nursing care in the Outpatient Surgery Department. OSHA Blood borne Pathogens Class I. Job Qualifications: A. Education: Graduate of accredited School of Professional Nursing or having been waivered by Certified Board testing. B. Personal Job-Related Skills: Demonstrated skills in nursing practice. Effective oral and written communication skills. C. Licensure, Registry or Certification: Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. BCLS, ACLS and PALS, preferred. D. Experience: E. Revised 04/14/15 1. Prior work experience: One year experience as a professional Registered Nurse in Outpatient Surgery preferred. 2. Technical Training: Current CPR Certification. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may become weak or helpless. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span. Demonstrates skills appropriate for care of are related patients. A. Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration. B. Responsible for all documentation in the EMR. C. Schedules the patient for Outpatient procedures in conjunction with OR schedule. Schedules the patient for Preoperative interview. (Surgical and non surgical). D. Responsible for scheduling pre operative interviews, lab, x-rays, and other ordered tests prior to procedure. E. Responsible for properly preparing and obtaining signatures on all consents. F. Responsible for assessment of and meeting the patient’s physical, safety, and emotional needs. G. Responsible for compiling all records necessary for the patient record and completing them prior to surgery. H. Participates in the planning and implementation of the patient care plan. 2. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory, demonstrates knowledge of disaster and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of good interpersonal relationships. A. Responsible for initiating blood administration. Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret results. Prepares, administers and monitors IV medications and blood/blood products per policy and procedure. Obtains blood from the blood bank conforming to lab procedures. B. Provides care to patients based on standards recognized and approved by the administration, the physician, and the licensing authority. C. Responsible for knowledge of emergency codes. Revised 04/14/15 D. Takes all accumulated charges at the end of the day to the appropriate department. E. Responsible for Outpatient logs and schedules on a daily basis. F. Interacts with patients, family member’s medical staff members and other department personnel with a respectful attitude and promotes a cooperative manner. G. Has a general positive outlook reinforced with positive behavior, and a positive work environment. H. Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self motivated. I. Responsible for administration of versed if ordered. 3. Provides instruction to Patient/Family regarding Outpatient process, policy and procedures. A. Responsible for pre-operative teaching and have the patient verbalize an understanding of what is taught. B. Prepares the patient for surgery both physically and emotionally. C. Responsible for home care instructions. Discharge instructions. The patient and family and/or significant other must voice an understanding of these instructions and a copy must be sent home with them. D. Gives clear documentation of discharge instructions and coordinates and directs patients care to ensure patient needs are met. E. Schedules a follow up appointment with their surgeon. F. Completes post-operative telephone questionnaires. G. Dismiss or admits the patient according to criteria set up in the Outpatient surgery manual. H. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relationship and a supportive atmosphere. I. Responsible for verification of patient: Correct patient, correct surgery, site and documents. J. Responsible for the patient record and completion prior to surgery. K. Responsible for the post op telephone questionnaire. 4. Assist Physicians with procedures as needed. Revised 04/14/15 A. Assures physician’s orders are carried out properly, call physician with updates and patient information as necessary. B. Assist the CRNA’s with patient information. C. Is responsible for all aspects of post-operative patient care. This includes, but not limited to monitoring vital signs, dressings, I & O, levels of pain, relief, presence of nausea, ability to ambulate, and any post-operative complications. D. Demonstrate competence in care of specimens. 5. Responsible for providing all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the probability of medical/health care errors. A. Safely transports the patient to OR. B. Checks the crash cart daily and documents the check. C. Follow aseptic technique and established procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials. D. Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matter on a daily basis. Follows HIPPA protocols. E. Proficient in the uses of the Accudose, EMR, Smart pumps, and accutron. F. Teach and direct other personnel assigned to work under their direction. G. Assist with the orientation, training and education of personnel. H. At the end of the day, all rooms must be cleared and restocked and cleaned. I. Maintain High Professional Standards by: 1. Demonstration of changing trends in nursing. 2. Active participation in conferences, classes, and staff meetings and other meetings as required. 3. Application of scientific principles in performing nursing procedures, knowledge or the rationale for nursing actions. 4. Supports and interprets the hospital philosophy, objectives, and policies.
