OUTPATIENT SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
Outpatient Surgery
Please READ THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES. These tips will ensure a more
pleasant visit to the Outpatient Department.
1. Patient will arrive in registration. Bring insurance cards. Living Will,
Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Do Not Resuscitate
(DNR) status will be addressed.
2. Patient needs to provide two reliable daytime contact numbers
(i.e., change in surgery schedule, general pre-op instructions, arrival time).
3. Patient will be required to provide a current medications list including:
dose of medications and frequency; any vitamins or herbals; all known
medication, food, or latex allergies. A list of all past surgeries will also
need to be provided in case any pre-op antibiotic may be needed.
4. For safety sake, you must have a responsible adult drive you home from
the hospital. You may wish to bring a pillow for the trip home.
Additional Information For Children
Parents may stay with a child in the Outpatient Surgery Unit. Your child
may bring a favorite toy or blanket from home. For children under 6 years
of age, please arrange to have another adult with you, as it may be unsafe
for you to care for your child while you drive home after surgery.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE CHILD CANNOT EAT OR DRINK AFTER
MIDNIGHT PRIOR TO HIS/HER SURGERY. If there is any change in your
child’s physical condition, such as a cold or fever, contact your physician as
soon as possible prior to day of surgery.
5. Laboratory tests, X-rays and other assessments ordered by your
physician will be completed prior to your surgery.
6. If there is any change in your physical condition, such as cold or fever,
contact your physician as soon as possible prior to day of surgery.
7. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING (INCLUDING GUM, MINTS, OR
WATER) AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY. If you are
having a local anesthetic, ask your physician for instructions regarding
diet restrictions.
