The Examination Room
Patient Management
 Good communication skills are exhibited
throughout the entire procedure to ensure
maximum patient care and comfort.
 A sonographer must recognize level of
responsibility and maintain professional
integrity,ASA 2010, 2.
Patient Duty of Care
- Explain Examination procedure and how
long it might take.
- Listen to the patient, show empathy and
interact with them to get as much
information from them as possible.
 Patient’s comfort is important for an effective
examination. Sonographer has to check with
patient from time to time if they are ok.

Position patient supine and negotiate
examination position where it is difficult to
lie them supine. Blood pressure from all
limbs is taken. Only peak systolic velocities
are recorded for ABI calculation.(where
 The examination room is cleaned before a
patient is called in. Any potential hazards are
removed from the room or packed securely in
a cupboard.
there is an ulcer or oozing wound, do not
take ABI but state on the worksheet.)

 Room is equipped with adequate clean wipes
or towels, warm gel and a blanket to cover up
patient if required.
Patient should be covered as much
as possible such that only region of interest

Patient Communication
 Patient care is part of a sonographer’s job and
is expected to provide a patient centered care
that is effective.
- Show respect all the times with a
consistent positive attitude.
- Ensure patient is safe and there is no harm
 Sonographer introduces herself to patient.
 Patient is asked to change into a gown and is
brought into the examination room where the
sonographer confirms patient’s name and
date of birth as well as type of examination
required.
 Clinical history is obtained from the patient
to correlate with the General Practioner’s
clinical notes on the referral.
